Has anyone a Birkenwald bred dog or seen one in the field? also have they ever been trialed in the UK with any success? just looking for others opinions as they seem well bred and smart looking dogs
Anne Gill was German and introduced a line of black GSP's into the UK.Her stock were all proven in Germany and bred to KS Kurzhaars. She did trial her dogs in the UK but prefered to have them tested in prufungs.
Like most HPR German bred lines they are hard hunting dogs, some folks can cope with that but some can't. Talk to Janice and Mark de Clifford of Hampshire Gundog who can give you all the information you require. Birkenwald Hasso and Erko gained FTA's but blacks weren't popular at that time.

she would have been pleased with that epitaph
Thankyou for the reply, can you explain the term "KS Kurzhaar" is it the same as a FTCH?
i have spoken to anne, before she sadly passed away and her enthusiasm and love of the breed was evidant in that short phone call, i just wanted to know a bit more background from those that had owned them and worked them in the field, and to how they rated them?
The KS Kurzhaar Siegar title is awarded to dogs who gain a 1st prize in a Kleeman trial which is held every two years. All entered dogs must score the minimum of very good in conformation, and have had a first prize in a VGP which is a general hunting test or bringsel and tracking prizes. The trial includes both field and waterwork with a 100% score requirement.
Each element of each test is judged to a standard laid down by their hunting club the JGHV, unlike here where scores are given by an individual judges opinion which gives no overall consistency in judgement, unlike the German / NA / Scandinavian tests which do. UK field trial awards for our breeds don't have a lot of kudos worldwide because they don't test for versatility.

so what your saying its harder or more of a test to gain a KS Karzhaar title than a field trial award?
