I have a Brittany that is 15 months old. The smartest dog I have ever owned and I have owned many.
This dog naturally does all types of things for hunting so the training is going well.

My only heart ache is how spastic he is. I like to let him in when I get off work and he just bounces around everywhere for 20 - 30 minutes.
Also when my wife and kid go out back to play he jumps all over them.

He does not do this to me as I am BOSS.

Anyway does some of the spastic characteristics go away with age? If so how old. I keep telling myself he is a pup and will grow out of a lot of this stuff.

Not sure if this is a help or not. I rehomed a Brittany 4 weeks ago, my first of the breed. Mugi is 10 yrs old and behaves like a 10 week old pup. He gets soooooo excited, bouncy and vocal when I come in or if he thinks he is going out. Once he is out on the fields or even at agility class he settles very quickly and is very smart and responsive.

I find his OTT behaviour quite endearing tbh - at least I know he is pleased to see me!

Thanks for the quick reply cressy.
Not sure that is what I was hoping to hear but Ill take it.

It really doesnt bother me as he will listen to me. Anytime he starts acting up I command sit and its all over.
However he doesnt really listen to my wife so I have to hear about it.

She will just have to live with it as he isnt going anywhere.

Does your wife do any of the training? Might be worth getting her involved more and he might start listening to her as well.

She tries to do some but doesnt have the patience that is required.
She has never had a dog so she is just getting to where she understands the patience that is required. And she is trying.
Thanks for the suggestion

Hello James.

The only gundog breed that needs calming tablets. Laughing My 5 yr old still thinks he is a puppy. He even wants to play with the most aggressive Rottweilers around. I have no idea how to cure their "disease", must say I kinda enjoy it. How is your garden? Best 4 legged digging machine on this planet.

When my puppy runs out to investigate a noise or something, and he is left behind, you just cannot imagine how he howls trying to catch up on the action.

BUT, when the guns come out its a different story. My older dog did not sleep for 4 nights on his first hunt he was so excited. He crashed for 5 days non stop after that... It was hilarious!!! Wont change for any other breed for all the tea in china....

All the best

Strange that ....................... Shocked -  This seems to be the one phrase that keeps popping up in any discussions about our scatty breed.  I have been known to say it more than once!  And by the way, they live on 'speed' till they are geriatric Rolling Eyes  I have had 12 Brits now and the ones gone past mostly lived beyond 15.  Maybe it's the adrenalin that keeps them alive? Your Britt sounds about par for the course, most reputable breeders give out valium tablets when they sell a pup ! Whether you take them yourself or give them to the pup is up to you ! Laughing
