Sharon, where do you think the "laid back" bit of the Ceskys' make up came from ?
Bill T.
Don't know Bill but I somehow doubt it came from the GWP <LOL> _________________ Sharon Pinkerton

i also know the guy over here with ceskies, he has a litter at the moment, i will take some pic's and hopefully he might join the site, he has spent some serious money getting the breed down here.
after a lifetime of labs,a curly,a gsp, a vizsla and a trio of britts i'll defend the gwp as a laid back breed, doing your homework on the bloodlines is the key. the breed had a bad rep as hyper and aggressive for many years in nz. the cesky may not have the inbuilt toughness that a well bred gwp has but they sure do carry alot of the gwp's good points.
Having owned GWP's for 30 years I am pretty confident in saying the vast majority are not "laid back". Sure some are and some are loopy but on the whole they are a very active, intelligent and somewhat demanding breed who love to be doing something. Laid back ..... in my eyes that's along the lines of the show bred Golden Retrievers and Labs .... _________________ Sharon Pinkerton

i'm not attacking your long involement with the breed sharon, but compared to other breeds, the gsp for example the gwp is far more relaxed and easy to have around, you forgot to add stubborn to the list no malice intended to gsp owners by the way.
my dogs are laid back, but not to the extreme of some showruined breeds, so long as they get a hunt now and again and plenty of attention they are happy to sunbath allday.
Yes I did forget the stubborn as that's normally top of my list of characteristics
I think you have summed up in your last paragraphy why your dogs are laid back because they are kept active - not always physically but mentally too. We have couch potatos in our household but only after they've been out but up to that point there is no way you could avoid taking them! _________________ Sharon Pinkerton

Hi Kiwi, I think your foundation stock of wirehairs must be a bit different from ours. The wirehairs I've any contact with in Scotland, are, with only one exception, not laid back. Two of them are poor hunters , that includes the laid back one. The others all run like stink but can be hard to control even with experienced handlers. I love their "thrust" while hunting but I'm not sure I could control them either.
Aggression to other dogs can be a problem too among the admittedly few of this breed I've seen. Two of these aggressive dogs belonged to the same man - I kind of think he's got a lot to do with it. One of his bitches was handed over to a pro trainer. He told me privately if he could get the breeds "go "without the aggression he'd never own anything else. He wasn't satisfied with his efforts when he handed the dog back but said he could do no more. When back with its' owner the bitch almost at once reverted to its' old ways.
This is a breed I've always liked, I would probably have had one by now if the breeders got the aggression carriers isolated and removed from the breeding pool.
My dog has most of the characteristics mentioned before, except "laid-back" to a greater or lesser degree.
During an odd period in her teenagerhood considerable attention was paid toward any tendency to aggression she is now pretty trustworthy if boisterous in 99% of circumstances. I do worry what goes on in her mind though and am totally behind Kiwi and Sharon in what they are trying to achieve for the breed.
I love the dash and enthusiasm when Liesel is working and it is such a buzz when that energy works for me. It forces me to keep thinking ahead of her because I don't want to let her down and the experience I am gaining whilst I attempt to keep my "first Ferrari" on the road is invaluable.
Bill with regards to temperament we have always had that as one of our main priorities and would never keep or even consider breeding with a GWP with any temperament issues either towards dogs or people. Long before the breed really got it's bad name for being aggressive we were advocating only breeding from good temperaments but on the whole people will always only see what they want to see. If a dog growls at another one more than once it's because they are protective..... yeah right. And the number of litters that have been bred from stock who regularly fight with other dogs or have in fact killed smaller dogs is quite unbelievable and it's no wonder there are some pretty major temperament issues still out there.
Yes their dogs may be fantastic workers, hunt like crazy, bend themselves into two when suddenly screeching into a point but if they are b*****ds to live with then why bother because I sure wouldn't. I've been over to our shoot today with two of my boys (one older dog and a youngster on his first shoot visit) and the one dog I could watch all day as he hunts like crazy, never misses game, steady on hare and you know the minute you set him off he "will" find you game. To boot he has a fab temperament and is trustworthy with dogs on the beating trailer, in the gallery, or beating line - this is what I want to continue breeding and enjoying to the full. I love the mention of Helen and her Ferrari as that is just what this dog of mine is like <LOL> When we run him in trials he is a "edge of a seat" dog but I love his style and have now realised it could just as easily go wrong and it could go right but all in all I know the judges will love his hunting! _________________ Sharon Pinkerton
