Hi everyone

I have recently updated my website about my experience of having an epileptic wire

www.ourdogalfie.com

Bearing in mind that I am desperately keen to be part of the solution to this horrid disease and not another part of the problem - I would really welcome people's feedback on it. It is long winded on the disease itself - this is because I know that when we got our diagnosis I was totally set on reading masses of stuff on epilepsy and I know other owners do the same. But what impressions does it give those of you who don't own an epi dog? You can leave your feedback here publicly or by pm don't mind.
TIA

Philippa

Thought I would add the contents of my file.  Somebody passed this onto me recently.  Might help others.

Isn't it wonderful how so many dog people are working so hard to find out about these problems to eradicate them.

What annoys me is how tight lipped people are about the bloodlines of the affected dogs, how can folk make informed choices when they don't know?

Another thing that I wonder about is why people aren't DNA tested so that many of our hereditary diseases can't be wiped out?  We are animals too  Wink

Hi MC

Yes it is frustrating. I believe that in Wires we could be "one conference call away" from mapping out where the epilepsy has occurred, then submit that info to a genetecist such as Bruce Cattanach to help us establish the mode of inheritence. From then on even without a DNA test we could help breeders make informed choices etc.

BTW the AHT here in the UK is collecting cheek swab samples from any dog of any breed affected by epilepsy and their siblings which are unaffected. They hope they will get a dna test.

www.aht.org.uk for more info.

Just "one conference call away"......

I agree Margaret especially from a Nursing perspective - however the PC lot amongst us would have us believe it's just not inline with Human Rights

Shocked

Hi Philippa,

just took a look at your website on Alfie......

It is fantastic! You have done a great job letting others know the way this disease overruns your life and just how hard losing a loved one to it can be.

I wish you well with your new boy Ferdy....

Sorry Philippa only just saw this post.

Your website is looking good, if only others were as committed instead of just playing lipservice to health problems like this. Continuing to use dogs who have been know to produce the condition or breeding closely on lines found to produce the condition makes me very mad Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad

Maybe we could start a fund to raise money to research into GWP epilepsy like the Cocker folk did for FN? The Cocker folk have now got a DNA test for FN thanks to all the research that was put in and the fundraising that took place.

Something for the Health Committee to look into perhaps?

Alex
