What a gorgeous day to be out on the hill, counting grouse.  It was my first day out for nearly a year and it was nice that Rob did the carrying of Sam this year! (I was about 5 months pregnant last year!).

We took my Teal out to give her a little bit of experience and Rob had worked his pointer yesterday and she was pretty tired.  I'm sure she would have had another day out but it was nice to give her a rest and get Teal out.  Dotty, english setter, is scared of the fog  Shocked after a day last year when she got lost for a while, which was only 10 minutes but you know what these setters are like Laughing !

It was a nice easy bit and I was incredibly pleased at how well she did.  She has been out on the grouse before but didn't do anything last year, due to me being pregnant mainly!   She covered the ground very well, and I was really pleased at how well she worked the wind.  Her back wind pass was particularly good for an inexperienced dog. She really has bags of natural ability.  Unfortunately, the grouse were still a bit wild but as they are doing more counts this year, they really need to crack on and start.  She did find a few pairs but I have to say, it did take her a while to find her stride.

I really can't fault her obedience, although I didn't really have to give her many commands, she stayed in sight.  I'm used to working pointers, who bog off over the hill on each pass but she made sure she was in sight all the time.  She did get a bit confused when we did a small gully as it was a steep bank on one side and a stream on the other so she didn't really know what to do.

It was really nice getting out there again and as Rob said carrying Sam in the rucksack was fairly easy, I might get out a few more times this spring!

Sound like you had a very good day Helen.

Nothing like starting Sam off nice and early into the joys of grouse counting  Laughing  Laughing

It was a great day and hope to get out again.  Just need to talk to Rob nicely lol.

It wasn't too strenuous as the counts are quite small and take an hour and a half.  Bit different to the 4 hours counts we did in Northumberland!  One block, took an hour to even get to!
