Our family has a brittney spaniel/black lab mix and he's a little over a year old. He's very active, very energetic and he'll hold alternating legs up for really no reason. He doesn't wimper, he doesn't act like its hurting him too bad. He'll go out to play and get to running and he let it down like he "forgot."
Any input?! _________________ Any questions or comments about the horses or me...just eMail!
Our GWP periodically carried her left hind leg in a similar manner to what you describe for up to a day when she was the same age. I took her to the vet imagining the worst ie hip displacia etc, they sedated her and checked for everything, taking x-rays and manipulating the joints to try and make something happen and couldn't find a thing.
She hasn't done it for ages and I wonder if she was "tweaking" a muscle or ligament when she leapt up at the birds in the trees in the garden. She would leap up to about 5ft in height! Fortunately she seems to have grown out of that a bit now.
I would get the vet to check your pup over asap so that if there is something amiss in her joints they can start to treat it before she does any damage.
Our Weim does this, but it's usually when the ground is wet and/or muddy and/or has stinging nettles. It's a sort of "well at least I can save one leg from the ground" effort as far as I can tell. She also does it when she has cut pads and is outside. Have you checked his pads? Does he ever show any disinclination to sit outside or to avoid muddy, wet places? _________________ Slate and Grey

Perhaps not a great help now but you should ALWAYS ask to see hte paperwork on hip scores of both parents. The Brittany average is 17 at present and should be as near level as possible i.e. 3 R 4L, 8 R 7 L etc rather than say 2/15. Most reputable breeders will also be able to tell you the scores of siblings to these which also establishes familial trends. Our breed data base, which I have access to, also gives details of registered dogs so I can help if necessary. Holding different legs up would not in my opinion indicate dysplasia although hopping could indicate slipping patella. A visit to the vet would be wise if this is prolonged, even if just to get metacam to relieve pain and inflamation.
Hope this helps

do cross breeds have their hips scored??? I didn't think you could register them? _________________ These are my personal opinions and do not represent in any way the views of the WCGB.
