Thought this might be of interest via the Longhair thread

" Genetic differentiation in pointing dog breeds inferred from microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA sequence " Paraz ETC.

Few mtDNA haplotypes were shared between the EB and the English Pointers and setters reflecting the isolation of this breed to the others. The spread of the Old Longhaired Spanish Pointing Dog ( espaniolz ) from the Pryrenees to French Brittany was brought about mainly by male individuals that were crossed with local females. This gave rise to the spaniel nucleus as ancestors of the EB. These dogs were crossed at the end of the 19th c with the Engish setter, pointer and other English spaniels shaping today's EB.This common paternal origin is relected by the abscence of significant paternal diversity between this breed and the english pointer.

You are obviously much more well versed in my breed than I am.  Can I ask where your information comes from?  I find this fascinating and would like to know more, as I am sure my fellow breeders would

I have a collection of old pointer books Annie including William Arkwrights The Pointer and his Predecessor " which is essential reading for all interested in the foundation of the English Pointer. If you know how this evolved you can soon work out the foundation of continental dogs too.

and knowing what to Google !

I was just interested to find out how the EB was classified the same as a longhair, but then I like all breeds which give me goose bumps in the field.

As for training tips  The Scientific Edition for dogs for the Gun written in the heyday of pointing dogs. Peter o Driscolls favourite too, with Robert Wehle's Wing and Shot.

Also Practical Essay on training or breaking the english spaniel or pointer, William Dobson, 1817

Never let your dog have a will of it's own
never pass a blunder unoticed nor fault unpunished
never administer the punishment without endevour on your part to make him comprehend the nature of his offence
never carry his punishment beyond the laws of all endurance so as to scare him out of his senses.
never avenge upon your dog your own errors in shooting.
never in fine let him perceive that the possession of the game is your chief object in the pursuit
never beat before your dog, nor let him lose his time behind you
never permit a chase on a hare
never suffer your children to ramble out with your dog.

Nothing changes!

Indeed not - I should remember these so I have put them on a word doc to print and hang in my study after I move to my new home.
What did you google to get the info?
