A couple of us were discussing just how difficult it is to train up a dog in Ireland. I was saying how pigeons, while far from ideal, were a useful tool. One of the others said that he had stopped using pigeons when he started having difficulty with aborting bitches and what we will call fading puppy syndrome for want of a better description. He seemed to think it was common knowledge. Having just had a single survivor from seven I took note.

Has anybody heard of a correlation between keeping pigeons and puppy problems?

Des, what is the suggested mechanism? I know in the US a lot of my Weim friends (many of them breeders) use a LOT of pigeons and AFAIK none of them have any problems although I will ask the question.

If you find anything further please let us know as I now keep pigeons for training and wouldn't want to store problems for the future.

Laughing The pigeons are also trained to the whistle, I blow the whistle and they come into the loft to feed.  Very Happy

Hi Des, I have had some replies from friends who keep a lot more pigeons than me and the only reported problem is increased instances of coccidia when the pups inadvertently get hold of pigeon poop. Other than that zero problems, so I am not sure if that is any help?
