Hello Langhaar people!
I am putting the finishing touches on the Langhaar chapter and need a bit of additional input from the experienced Langhaar folks on the forum.
Specifically, I would appreciate your comments re: the protective nature (or lack thereof) in Langhaars. As many of you know, the breed is sometimes referred to as the "old forester's dog" (as an aside, it is not the only breed to make the claim, Stichelhaar and some Weim folk say the same thing about their dogs..)
Anywho, back in the day, the foresters job was very difficult...and dangerous. Poachers and bandits roamed the woods and gunfights between the good guys and bad guys were not uncommon. In addition, any forester's dog was required to dispatch vermin. So the old forester's dogs (of whatever breed) were probably pretty tough, protective sons and daughters of bitches. Some must still be that way.
So my question to you is: how protective are your dogs? Does a Langhaar make a good watchdog? Do you know of any that do shutzhund or ringsport type activities? I am not talking about agression here...just the normal protective instinct in a well balanced Langhaar.
