Fore those of you with recent interest in the state of the SRHP thread - a health report page has just gone live on the SRHP website. This includes a copy of my report if any of you are after some light weekend reading
http://www.slovakianroughhairedpointerclub.org.uk/healthreports.html
The only caveat being that I am not a breeding or genetics expert but have tried to produce something that will be a good starting point for those with far more knowledge than myself.
Many thanks to the breed club for publishing it.

Very well done, Kate. I'm glad to see it supported by the breed club. Well done everyone. _________________ Grey's blog http://greys-days.blogspot.com/ |

| Well done Kate. I am pleased to say that the club not only support this but are already acting on a number of issues raised from this and my recommendations - A breed health sub-committee to include non committee members, breeding guidelines, information for potential new owners and a careline for rescue and re-homing issues are just the beginning. I will monitor the situation from the darkest recesses which are home to treasurers everywhere. |

very interesting. Well done what a great start for a breed.
Do the SRHP have a newsletter? Weim owners used to write letters noting any significant problems in their litters or dogs that would effect the breed when they were a single club. Is this something that you could encourage members to do??
If each breeder provided a litterbox update during the UK development that would help everyone but it would have to be done with objectivity and not the current blame culture where health issues leave you potentially hung drawn and quartered as a breeder.
For an example in my weim litter compressed write up would be info on:
sire - Grafite Greystones and
Dam - Gunalt Sensuous at Spearhil,
Litter DOB - 23/04/08
ratio - 2F 7M
Losses - 1F
Loss Note: Non Suckling, hand fed death within 48hrs, stripes covered by green gunk.
Type: 1F 1M type 1* 6M type 2**
(*smaller darker in colour, ** larger lighter in colour)
Wormer: Drontal Oral Suspension Bitch prewormed, pups born worm free. As per manufacturers instructions.
Vaccination: Fort Dodge Dappi+lc x2 7&10 weeks vet recommended
Vaccination Note: 1FT1 1MT2 reaction to 2nd vaccination F: Facial Odema o/n vets steroid anti swelling clear 24hrs. M: Facial Odema Piriton clear 24hrs.
Chipped: wk7
Vet Checked: Development/condition bi weekly from 24hrs
Weaned: wk4-5 Arden Grange / tripe / Goats milk
Accident /Injury: 1M bruised leg puppy play wk7. Vet cleared.
Pups Retained: 1F 1M
Pups Rehomed: 6M Individual Homes
Returned: 0
I would include things like the vaccinations and the worming program because manufacturers products can be responsible for some of the problems currently being seen under the Auto-Immune disease umbrella, its too easy to blame breeding when the cause itself is still unknown by both vets and scientists so any additional info could aid with finding cause or trigger.
Updates could be given if there are health issues (so Meningitis developes 6mnths +) or at say 3yrs and then in say 5yr incrememts? with date/reason for death. Mine had 1 with Meningitis under 1yr so this would be a suitable update along with a return and note on neutered dog removing them from the gene pool as potential studs.
Its not easy for breeders though you have to have the participation of your owners not just the breeders and more often than not they don't stay in touch or they don't update you when things go wrong or right for that matter.
I know that I would have appreciated the guidance of a breedmaster to aid my choice of stud. Perhaps this is something else that you can look into if your basing potential matings on COI rates. _________________ These are my personal opinions and do not represent in any way the views of the WCGB. |

Well done All, but especially Mick and the SRHP Committee for taking this important lead. Also to Kate for her clear and unemotive analysis. The breeders who have agreed a moratorium till 2012 deserve some credit too!
Best wishes for the future. _________________ Nigel

Dog World breed notes (2nd Sept), written by Julie George-Ainscough, state:
"The SRHP Club committee recently published their most comprehensive health reports on the breed to date, covering all known stock in the UK with the help of Kate Reevell. Kate, herself an owner of an SRHP, worked alongside the club."
This implies that the Club has produced and published this report, with Kate's help as secondary. That is, in fact, not correct: Kate is the sole and only author of this paper and it originated with Kate, not the Club. On hearing that it had been written and was to be circulated, with or without their help, the Club 'offered' to publish it on their website.
At least that is set straight here. Shame about the entire readership of Dog World, who will be left thinking the SRHP Club is admirably forward-thinking in commissioning health reports... _________________ Slate - 7yo Weimaraner

The Club published two reports, with the following citation:
| Quote: | | The Club would like to thank both Kate Reevell and Mick Heap for their respective works and hope you find them both interesting and informative. |
This implies that there were two reports compiled by two people, who have been acknowledged and thanked by the Club. _________________ Nigel

Nigel, whatever they have said elsewhere doesn't negate what has been published in Dog World. _________________ Slate - 7yo Weimaraner
