A good day

I've had a really good day with training today.
1st thing this morning we had a good walk over the heath with Max responding brilliantly to all commands.

Just got back from another walk and again, he did fantastic.I've been struggling with him with distractions but just now there was a dog coming towards us,so i whistled him in.He came and i made him sit and leave it as it went by. It even came up to him and smelled him and his bum stayed firmly planted on the ground. I then continued on with Max walking to heel off lead. I'm really pleased Laughing

Isn't it nice when things go well for once Very Happy

shhhh, don't say that lol. Whenever I say that, I have a disastrous training session the following day lol.

What sort of training are you doing? How are you getting on?

Max is an 8 month old pointer. I'm just aiming for general obedience as i want to just do beating with him. He walks to heel really well both on and off lead. His recall to the whistle is pretty good. He will now drop to the whistle at a distance of about 70 feet.
This is all completely new to me and i know nothing!!
A friend who beats said to just keep doing what i'm doing and get him perfect.
We are getting better with distractions but no where near as good as i want. But i have to remember, he is only 8 months.
He has gone on point a few times at pigeons in the garden and i've got him to hold the point before rushing in.
Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated as i am a complete novice.

I've only had experience of training pointers for grouse work which I'm sure is a LOT easier than training for the beating line.

Sounds like you are doing an excellent job!

Keep up the good work Max!

Are you looking for pointers (pardon the pun!) on beating or pointing?

Both. I've never done anything! Shocked Laughing

For pointing, it is just a case of letting his natural instinct take over and encouraging it. When we first take dogs up to the grouse, we let them do everything naturally. They generally have their own hunting ability and when they go on point, we stand back and wait. We did used to go up to them and stroke and praise them but we found that just standing back and letting them hold the point works better.

Beating is another thing altogether and I guess the people who do go beating with their hpr's will have more knowledge. Dread to think what any of my lot would do on a beating line Shocked lol

Guess what? He was pain in the bum this morning Laughing Laughing
Only once. I didn't see a lady enter the heath with 2 little furry things on leads but Max did!! He ran off to them and totally ignored the whistle. I called him, he ignored me, i called him again, he ignored me Mad I whistled again, still ignored me Evil or Very Mad As i was walking to get him, i bellowed!!! He came running, happily wagging tail. Rolling Eyes
He did redeem himself later. He saw a springer and 2 setters and he was about 20 feet or so in front of me. I blew the stop whistle and and he dropped Shocked It was like him saying, 'see, i can do it' Laughing Laughing
Helen

lol, they certainly keep us on our toes. Pointers especially!
