This morning I had a chance meeting with a picker up I know. Last week both he and another picker up saw a pheasant fall dead onto an iced over fish pond. They both decided that the pheasant could simply stay there as they would not send their dogs onto ice.

They walked away with their dogs at heel. A couple of moments later it was noticed that a cocker was no longer there. She had sneaked back for the pheasant and gone through the ice - she still hasn't been recovered.

This isn't H.P.R. stuff but it is worthwhile remembering that although you may have decided its too dangerous , your dog won't know that.
I feel very sorry for that little bitch.
I wish it was possible to be wise before the event.

Hurrendous! Makes me feel sick to my stomach. I'm afraid this just backs up why I would rather do without an award than put my dog into frozen water. My dogs life is just far more important!

i was shooting on a driven shoot last friday and on one of the drives, i was on a peg next to a loch, it was frozen over, but i was under strict instructions not to shoot any game which flew over the loch for fear a dog may try to retreive it, needless to say about 20 head of game flew over it Rolling Eyes

I will be picking up tomorrow at a shoot with a small loch that most of the birds fall into at one drive. Twice now I have left it to others to pick up from there due to it being iced over. Nothing has happened yet but I.M.O. it is a tragic accident just waiting to happen.

I may get looked at askance for leaving it to others to risk their dogs but I just don't think that drive should be used when the ice is on the water.

How awful but like Claire, my dogs lives are worth far more than a game birds.

Last week when I was picking up with Pagan she was adament there was bird on the ice although for a time I couldn't see anything. Then in between some broken branches on top of the ice was a dead duck which she was desperate to get to. I put her on a lead and walked away.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

this is why i said a few weeks back dogs and ice are a non starter.iv seen one dog drown on a big lake took about ten minutes,i can still see it in graphic detail it was shocking

We have a little row boat on the lake on my local shoot its much safer and means we can still retrieve the birds if needed. They must be devastated.
