A year on - any change ?It has now been just over a year since I joined this forum. I have a vague memory of writing that I like the game itself to be a dogs command to be steady to flush. With both rabbits and birds I am now getting to that stage with my "pup" - now 15 months old.
Have any others among you made the situation itself the command to be steady ? Are you still whistle and or vocal commanding your dogs when game is flushed ? I know this can be needed at times but are many of you still doing that ALL the time?

How do you do this?

If you had asked me that on Saturday i would have said I always reinforced with whistle - an automatic response on my part i suppose. But on Sunday we were out in rape - i was taking the opportunity of working him down wind, just leaving him to it to see what happened - he disturbed a bird and SAT of his own volition
The puppy is sitting to a report - even a bird scarer makes him sit at the moment - i expect her to loose this a bit when she starts to 'hot' up with teenage years coming on.

Al sits to gunshot but chases to flush. I wondered how Bill got them to stop naturally to flush. Is it just volume and they get to learn they can't catch?

he tells a story about bait digging and seagulls somewhere.
I teach sit to 'flush' the same way as other 'sits'
sit to voice and then add hand signal, when that is sound add whistle. Then when a bird is flushed use the whistle to get the sit. After a while the flush acts as the trigger and you can stop using the whistle.
i have seen Topaz sit when he sees me put the whistle towards my mouth - taking the hand movement as a visual clue.

I'm still doing it with Teal, just as a reinforcement. Probably, me lacking in confindence in her.
My springer, USUALLY sits to flush but she's a springer and she changes every day lol.
Has it only been a year Bill :0 lol

Hi Helen , yes it has "only" been a year Something about the way your post was written made me think perhaps it had been longer. No wonder you could think that ! I have just had a look at how many posts I have made in that year - the number is horrendous ! I am going to get a life and do a lot less writing and a lot more fishing to pass the time.
I asked the question posed by this post due to having read in this forum and on another one of problems arising from the flush situation. Aside from my opinion that a sit to flush with no command from a handler looks and sounds much tidier and more professional , it also has less obvious but very valuable uses.

"Dropping to wing" is a credit point in the field trial world Freddy has always done it from when we got him (naturally and without training) and my other dog does do it but I think that was a conditioned response from my commands on something being flushed. I do think practical experience in the shooting field teaches them to stop momentarily whilst they "watch" the game away.

It certainly did with Pippa. I found it a way to stop her running in (after having a horrendous season with her). She soon learnt to sit to flush without a command and then look back at me. It was just one way to control a wild spaniel.
How many posts Bill lol. We would miss you if you were fishing all the time lol
