Another nightmare from StonehavenHello all,
Just joined the forum after a few months of reading posts as a guest. I am mates with Barry (sako) and have been for about 25 years. I have 4 labs and a springer at the moment but plan on maybe getting a wire haired german at a later date. Into trialling and shooting over the dogs and have a Lab at the moment that will hopefully do well at trial's this year. We will just have to see how she goes.

Hi Adam - welcome.
How hard is it to get a run in FT with a lab?? keep hearing stories about having to be a member of dozens of clubs an putting in multiple entries - just wondered how true this might be.

Hi,
Although quite new to trials i do know that it is a nightmare to get runs, more so in England i think. It costs me at least £200 a year in club fees . Some of the clubs will run 2/3 trials a year while most will only run one of each ( 1 novice 1 open ). At least you get your money back if you are not picked for a run. Hopefully will get a few runs nearer the end of the season.

Hi Adam, welcome to the forum. I like your nickname, I was very disappointed to see you'd put your real name at the bottom of your post. I was going to say hello while abbreviating your nickname a bit!
Retriever trials were a nightmare to get a run in, I eventually gave up even trying to get a run. The end of the season is a good time to trial a lab. There is not nearly so many birds to wind the dog up and it is easier to get a run as a lot of handlers have given in after discovering their swans are geese!

Welcome to the board, I've got 2 gwp's. My oldest is used on the grouse counts and has a fantastic natural hunting ability. It didn't take much to train him at all. I also have his daughter who is just over 2 who is showing the same promise has him. I've taken things a lot slower with her as she seemed to mature slower. She's had a few days grouse counting, grouse beating and dogging in and has been such a biddable, easy dog to train - so far lol! I am deciding whether to trial her or just use her purely for working but I'm training her with the aim of trialling her. I'll see what the next season brings.

Did you find that no matter how hard you found it to get a run some people always seemed to be "lucky enough" to get drawn nearly every time.
I'm glad I'm not suspicious otherwise I may have started thinking that some draws were less than honest.

I wasn't just suspiscious, I was certain that in the draw some entries were more equal than others! I originally bought a Brittany , not to trial it but to find game out on the wide open spaces I had to shoot over. It was easy for me to get picking up but walkng up practice with a lab was what I needed. This worked fine but at the same time as I became disgusted at trying to get runs in lab trials. I became enthused, even besotted, by the Brittanies work. I began trialling H.P.R.'s and kept the labs for picking up.
I had little difficulty getting runs with my labs in Scotland - I may even have been an unknowing "victim" of some favourable draws from the hat myself. I was well known up here. England was a different matter, I never got one single run in an English trial! The only retriever trial I ever competed in there was the retriever championships, they couldn't keep me out of that!
