Big Day

As some of you know Cully and I are very new to the working scene but thoroughly enjoying ourselves. We started attending a shoot this season, probably not the most sensible one to start with as it is a very high profile big money affair attended by some well known faces. Anyway Cully has been learning on lead in the beaters line getting used to the sights and sounds. Yesterday the keeper sent us to work the steep side of a valley just above the guns and to make it easy for us in amongst a herd of sheep. "Let her off and get her to work the hawthorn and bramble areas" says the keeper. You can imagine my heart was in my mouth I had visions of her chasing pheasants and partridge through the sheep and past the guns.... Well I could not have been more proud of her she listened to my commands, not that she needed many, held some lovely steady points and behaved impeccably. I spent the next three drives trying not to grin and to top it all the keeper asked if we can come back on Wednesday!!
Pretty tame stuff to many of you I'm sure but for a novice handler with her Italian dog it was a very special day.

On a shoot

Hi Kim and Cully,
Well done - you must be so chuffed with your achievements with your lovely girl and you deserve to go around grinning from ear to ear.
I, too, attended a local Shoot as a Beater and had a thoroughly enjoyable time - am going back again too for the rest of the season.   At the moment am not taking Ray!!!! but who knows later on!!

Big Day

Thanks Guys,
No doubt I'll come down to earth with a bump all too soon and Cully will be off after a hare or something but at least I know we are heading in the right direction with our training.
I'm glad you had a good day too Lisa, I'm sure Blu was brilliant as usual.
Take care everyone and see you soon.

Pleased to read your thread Kim ! I hope your days in the field will be rewarding and exciting.  Dogs make mistakes and there will be nothing Cully will do which hasn't been experienced by all of us at some time or other. " I was picking up with Konan one day on the last drive before lunch on a shoot and luckily the owner and guns had walked back to the house. The old goat came across a deer and disappeared into the next drive in full tongue scattering birds all over the shoot. He came back eventually with a grin on his face Laughing Back at the house I was asked what took me so long so said the dog had been on solid point and wouldn't produce until I found him. All the guns said what a marvellous dog he was while I sat with a smile on my face. Wily feminine charm wins every time Laughing  Laughing
