Bill and Shows [or not as the case may be]Just to let you all know that 'Bill' has chickened out of showing Buck
He is saying and I quote 'Buck is in such hard working condition that no judge would look at him' In other words we need to make him grovel Had he even sent off an entry form I ask myself Is this a devious ploy to go to a show but make sure that none of us lot are there to witness his shame All is revealed on the Gundog Training Forum down in writing if you want to confirm the shame of it
|
Claire
|
I would suggest he enter another open show on Sunday 1st March, same venue (Jack Kane Centre in Edinburgh). It is run by East of Scotland Canine Club and the judge is an A panel FT judge - Anne Johnson of Maplehaze GWPs. Absolutely no excuse now me finks
|
newbie
|
Well im sure he definately asked David Todd at ringcraft for a schedule but did he fill it out or not well that is the question
|
newbie
|
Maybe we should kidnap him Claire lol
|
Lisa
|
Oh Bill!! Kidnapping is a good idea!! Make him show against his will!! Surely there is no law against that!! Or do you mean kidnap Buck
|
Bareve
|
How can he refuse to enter under Anne who is one of our original F/T people in GWP's and has owned Weimars for a long time (before she changed over to the Wirehairs). She for one would appreciate a dog in hard condition as her dogs are flat out once the grouse moors get going.
Come on Bill - you've got to keep your end of the deal......
|
Claire

I never knew she used to own weimars!! Or did I and I've forgotten? Oh gawd, heed up @rse today

That was a very Scottish expression for a Geordie
I think one of us should kidnap Bill and another kidnap Buck and keep them apart till they both agree to entering a show.

First you have to catch him

Oh, I'll catch him all right!

haha not likely! Heed is also geordie slang for head! I might have been living up here for 13 years but I'm definitely not Scottish
|
Claire

Should have said that the differences are:
Scottish slang is "ma heed"
Geordie slang is "me heed"
translated poshly into "my head"

I think Plan A is: Someone enter him and fake his signature.
Plan B is: Someone else show Buck, so at least we get his dog in the show ring if not himself!
|
Claire
|
I would be happy to show Buck, he is a nice dog, but the plan is to see Bill in the ring! Preferably wearing a kilt
|

I think the best way forward would be to offer a trade off. Bill - a non show person is going to enter a show then a non trial person should offer to enter a trial.
|
Ghilliegumdrop

Guy....keep up That is why we were seeing Bill in the ring [or not etc etc] Clare went in a trial and Bill was going to show Buck except he has now chickened out Naughty naughty boy....that's his privileges withheld for an unspecified period. Let Big U know not to talk to him
PS It's noticable that he hasn't come on here and made his excuses Very quiet he's being
|
Lisa
|
mmm yes he is being very quiet!! maybe he has packed his things and gone into hiding!!
|
BritAnnie

Well he's not hiding very far away - only in Buck's Diary - he's just avoiding us

That deal was done when Claire entered her first trial with Whistle!! I think Bill is backing off a done deal and that is just wrong!!
Mugi would like to point out (as he feels he and Bill have a connection so he can try shame him into action) that Buck will obviously adore showing as he does - why not stand there expecting to be admired and fed sausage at the same time , tis a tad boring but for food it is worth it .

Sorry folks , I just came across this thread a moment ago. It very rarely even occurs to me to look at "Conformation" on this or any other forum. It could have been missed by me altogether !
I gave my word and I will keep it. I will show Buck and unless there is a good reason not to I will do it myself. After all, Claire ran her own dog in the trial so fairs, fair.
Buck is a mass of muscles and bone right now - and that's just his head ! He has a very distinct bald patch ,about the size of a ten pence piece on top of his tail about halfway along it. I have no idea what caused this - would it matter in a show ?
I will need a lot more tuition than I am getting at present. I have been to one ringcraft class and not even David who is very good and very patient with me can train me in just a one hour training class !
If I am going to do this I am going to do my best. I don't mind making a fool of myself but I refuse to make a fool of Buck because I haven't tried hard enough.
He isn't used to being "gone over" and I am not used to "stacking" a dog.
I noticed in Davids class that I had bother moving fast enough to make Buck have the correct stride etc. There is nothing I can do about that. Popping my clogs with a heart attack in a showring would be about the last way I'd choose to go !
...................................................................................
While on the subject of showing, Annie ,I have a couple of books belonging to Guy - can you get them down to him when you attend a show or a Brittany function ? If so - when ?
Thanks
Bill T.

oo I love a man who keeps his word they are few and far between. Have to say what a wonderful opportunity for a show judge to see a proper working dog in working condition as well will put the others in the ring to shame!!
Good luck Bill... you know expanding tummy or not I think this might be worth dragging my bottom up north with a camera.
PS I have a pair of decent skates your welcome to borrow if you need a bit of extra ummph to get around the ring

Bill, I'm sure Claire or Annie or someone would love to give you some ringcraft lessons

You could always get someone else to run him in the ring Bill and you can just stack him ,im sure there will be plenty willing to help.

I can see Bill's point about him not being agile enough to show Buck off at his best but then again we never said you had to win Bill
Good luck .

I'll be flying down for the AGM next month, Bill. We'll make arrangements for you to give me a battering over the lack of progress in Allez's training and the books to be handed over along with a crash course in stacking Buck. I can easily run him for you - I still have enough puff for Hester so I'll manage Buck. I could come over to your ring craft class if you like- just say when and where? Is it David Todd you are talking about?
|
BritAnnie
|
Right girls - we have him cornered
|
newbie

It is David Todd, the class is on holiday just now but should be starting up again pretty soon Trish phoned him the other day to find out when but he wasnt sure soon i hope the only problem with the class is the venue not the biggest of halls for a gundog but it is only 2 mins away from me.

Hi newbie - can I have a post code for my TomTom please?

Yey! way to go Anne!!

BritAnnie

I'll get him entering a show yet! He has been at shows a number of times before, (and Dale too!) just not with a dog in tow! So not a hugey step for him, the biggest step is getting him in the ring. Can I have an assurance from everyone that they will NOT laugh at him once we get him in there? Buck is worth it in my opinion.

Uphall Station is at the S.W. end of Broxburn. It is probably less than 10 minutes drive from my house. David Todd has been very encouraging every time I have spoken to him. It is a small hall but the tuition is good - probably first rate for all I know about it !

The good thing about going to David he tells you exactly what he thinks and isnt shy in telling you which is what you want, as i said before the hall isnt the best size for gundogs but it does the job

David is a good handler himself and has a quiet way with him so I imagine he is good at ring craft. I can come along next Thursday, Bill, to hold your hand while you show Buck! Then I can keep you up to scratch (to get my own back on you!) Only joking - you know I appreciate all you've told me. I assume 7.30 unless I hear otherwise. Might take one of the girls - how much cash do I need with me? Is it actually in the station?

you go into Uphall Station 1st left is the train station you turn 2nd left the hall is on the right next to the chinese its only a couple of £,im sure Bill will direct you better if needed.

The folk from down the hill do a bit of showing, I'm told that stacking a dog is a doddle . One hand clamps onto the dogs lower jaw while the thumb [or index finger for small breeds] of the other hand is pushed firmly up the dogs rear orifice. Apparently this is most efficacious in making the dog stand rigidly . ...............or perhaps, they too , are taking the piss !

I have found that stroking a dog's [male] dangly bits will keep him still......unfurtunately it tends to put a goofy look on their faces Bit like you at the sight of Big U Bill

lol, good on you Bill! Make sure you get in the ring this time
I did well under Anne Johnson with Teal. She was in good, working condition and she appreciated that. I have a friend who lives on the estate where she works her dogs. If you are going to enter a show, enter under her!

I am pleased to read that some judges know what a work-fit dog looks like. I had gained the impression that I would have to put about 6 to 8 pounds of weight onto Buck to make him look ready for the ring. At present I can see every rib he's got ! He is being fed twice a day to get some more food into him but he runs it off the next time he's out !
Once the season ends he will put on a couple of pounds but not at the moment !
Bill T.

The GSP judge at SKC this year knows perfectly well what a work fit dog would look like, he has won FT awards with his own GSP's.
So no excuse for not showing there Bill

I'll have a fiver on that. Split the winning with you Bill

I'm not that daft.....the 1 is my side of the bet
|

|
I have said I would and I will so I will happily accept all bets as to me not doing a show. I have my priorities and I prefer to use my energies for shooting rather than showing but when the season ends I should be able to think of other things than shoots.
The other good news is that the cocker shooting and trialling season goes on for much longer - there are still trials - not tests - in March !!! I'm so glad I got a cocker !
I will show Buck but maybe not for a month or two yet. I do want to get him used to being handled etc. by others . He is very friendly so that shouldn't be a problem. Stacking a dog is what I can't get my head around. Why would anyone who knows dogs need to see one stacked ?
I don't like stacking Buck ,it is undignified for both man and dog.

For the last couple of weeks I have been getting ready for the show season ! With the aid of a large funnel and a broomstick handle I have been packing grub down Bucks gullet. He now has a covering of flesh and a little fat over the muscle and bone !
The little baldy bit on his tail has been dosed with hair restorer but it doesn't work any better on him than it does on me !
I still haven't got around to stacking him but I hope to be taking him to the ringcraft classes tonight.
The day of his show debut looms ever closer !

Good luck Bill..........we will all be thinking of you [and sniggering up our sleeves ]
A couple of tips;
1 Don't attempt to bribe the judge with the odd bottle of whiskey [most of them prefer 50 year old brandy]
2 If it's a lady judge, don't say you think she has nice legs, nice boobies or is a Big U look a like and can she meet you behind the bike shed afterwards for a bit of 'hows your father'
2a ditto if it's a man judge [in which case wear your trousers or don't bend down in front of him]
3 Don't tell the judge that you can train their dog to stand like Buck
4 Make sure that your kilt doesn't flap in Buck's eyes thus making his movement suspect, that is, of course, presuming the judge will be looking at Buck's movement [see 2a above] as you trot away from him
I am sure there are more that somebody can post for you so that you don't make any mistakes.

I've got to go to Crufts Bill which I think is the worst show of all (as Helen has entered Ekko in the FT class) - especially when you hate the showing bit! We're going to the HPRBA ringcraft session for a lesson with Sharon on the way back from shooting on the Saturday.

Annies as p*$$*d as a newt !
I went to the classes . Buck enjoys it . Folk to play about with his wobbly bits while other folk stuff him with livercake ! Great joy at both ends.
I appear to have made a boo-boo. I have been in the habit of keeping Buck steady as I approached his points by very quietly saying " Wait - wait." I thought it would be of use to stop him prancing about while at the stand during the ringcraft classes. I used it tonight and he at once went on point ! It would seem that I have trained him to point on command !
I know another bloke who has done that and used it in a trial ............ He won !!!
I was standing beside two ladies who were discussing the finer points of their G.W.H.Pointers. Not wishing to appear unfriendly I joined in the conversation. " I've got one of them at home." I said. " What ! " said one of the ladies , " A Wiry ???" ........ "Yes ," I said ," I use it for cleaning the limescale out of the kettle !"
Well I thought it was funny !

I can vouch for himHe was there! Proof below. No Buck, as he was observing to see what he was supposed to do. He chatted to a few folk, got probably about 10 different answers to his questions, and believe it or not stayed till about 2.30pm - I'm sure he won't admit it but he may even have enjoyed the company and friendship, if not watching the dogs being shown.
One shows Bill about to stuff the standard show bacon buttie into his mouth the other he is - Hmmm .............. Pensive, deep in thought, concentrating, or just plain bored - anybody want to guess?

The closest to working type were the H.P.R.'s and the flatcoats.

Must say that I agree with you Bill re some of the gundog breeds.....the labradors look like Pot Bellied Pigs

I think we are all agreed on that. I don't think there are many people trying to both work and show except HPR folk, maybe the odd one or two - Carole Coode does a lot with her labs but they don't really look half as bad as the majority of labs in the show ring. There are a few others out with the HPR world who do both too.
We won't tell Dale about the butties and cream cake- will we peeps????

If he's like me, the first half hour I'm usually catching up on gossip.
The next half hour I'm paying attention ( puppies and novice classes) looking at the breeds future, and seeing if anything catches my eye
There after, I've usually drifted off and remembering doing things with my dogs that I have done, should of done or need to do
If I'm actually got a dog to show, then this latter phase is interupted by me asking someone close by which class is this every so often so I don't miss my entry ( and if I'm lucky, get to run a comb through the dogs ears to get the burrs out )
Don't worry Bill your not alone
