As Jan says, a bit like a G.S.P. They are smaller than the G.S.P. and are apparently a bit sensitive in temperament. I first saw photos of them 20 + years ago and remarked then that it was a wonder that anyone had gone to the bother of inventing the G.S.P. since it already existed !
I had a brittany at the time and my remark was not well received by the G.S.P. folk present !

I'm not sure if there are any Braque Francais in the UK, there may be one or two, but certainly not many.
The breed is relatively popular in France. There is also a club in Quebec and a few breeders in the US. The breed is divided into two "types" the Pyrenees type is smaller, faster, wider running of the two and much more popular among hunters and field trialers. The Gascony type is larger, somewhat slower, closer working....more of an old fashioned classic "braque". There are very, very few breeders of the Gascony type.
The do look like a GSP but the Pointer influence is more visible in both look and performance especially among the pyrenees type.

Thanks Chiendog, I had been reading about the breed and had got onto a site ran by an American couple who are now breeding the smaller type. The breed sounds good to me, no doubt if they were readily available here I would have bought a pup by now !

I will be photographing some Braque Francais, both types, in France at a trial in the north of France (near Calais). The breed club in France is fairly dynamic and, for the most part, focussed on the working aspects of the breed. The best BF's are very, very good dogs that would probably do quite well in UK type trials. They tend to be more "bird dog" than GSP's and GWP's . They also tend to be somewhat softer in character and probably easier to train for basic field work, but perhaps less well suited to advance versatile work like tracking/stalking/water etc.
Here are a couple of sites:

Hi Bill,
My friends have braque francais here in Turkey. They are imported from Germany and France. They are good in wood and open area.
I hunt with one of them for woodcock and quail. They point too close and chase the bird if the bird walks. They are very sensitive dogs. Traditional training methods with choke chains (negative reinforcement) are not good for these dogs. They are very obedient. The French says about this dog that "they born half trained." Of course not but very easy to train them if you use positive reinforcement without any punishment.
These are my friend's BF in Turkey.
These are some good breeders in France
