Companion showI entered my 10 month old Pointer in the Any Variety Puppy Class at Sherborne Fair today just for a giggle. There were about 25- 30 puppies!!
He came 4th !!
I am so proud
i know it was only a companion thing but do you think this means he might be a bit of a decent looking dog?

It all depends on who the judge was.

I'll try and find out.
It was all proper stuff and to be honest i felt a bit out of my depth as i wasn't expecting it to be so serious! I've never done anything with Max and he certainly didn't 'show' that well. In fact as the judge approached, he bloody jumped up at him

Well done
Right, now have to get you in some Open shows

Madmax,
Well done
Be very careful when it comes to shows, they can be seriously addictive for all the wrong reasons And the occassional bit of success only goes to feed the addiction
Is your pointer from working stock or show stock? (I am assuming that there is a split?) I've loved the pic's that Des has posted of his pointers but can't say I have seen anything that resembles them around the show ring!

Hi as I have said on NOBS I was in the ring with my GWP pup at the same time and the judge thought she was a spinoni, thats companion dog shows for you, I was chucked out but I dident mind shes not a good spinoni lol, but she was a very badley behaved wirehair, we were late arriving and she was very unsettled, she qualifed for Crufts on Saturday so im quite chuffed with her although she was the only one there(the judge could of with held her qualifing place) and she was a star at the scurry at sherbourn. If you are interested in showing Max try and get along to a open show, there is a gundog one in teh Bath & West tomarrow if you are going and have a look at the pointers there it will give you a bit more of an ideal than a companion dog show

Max's Dad is actually a Show Champion but showing isn't something i've considered.........until now!
I don't know if i've got the patience for all the hanging around tho.
Countrygirl, did you see the other Pointer in the ring? It turned out that he has the same Dad as Max!! I think the owners may have been a bit peeved that we got 4th cos they are show people and i was there just for a giggle.
It was a laugh tho and i am so proud of our rosette!!!!!!

Be proud of your rosette, there are good and bad judges at Companion, Limit, Open and Championship shows alike!
Enjoy your success and remember you always take the best dog home!
There are some dogs that do well at Open Shows etc and not at Championship shows and vice versa.
I always feel very sorry for judges at Companion Shows as they never know WHAT is going to appear in the ring........
Very well done!

Well you def need to do some more shows and get some more rosettes lol, I dident notice the other pointer as I was late arriving and only just got in to join the end of the class i was trying to settle Rumour with out luck lol, I just dumped my coat complete with purse with a complete stranger sitting at side of ring, I had a quick chat with some people from outside the ring with a rescue GWP, the classes were huge and like you say there can be a lot of hanging around

Well done! I've just started showing my young gwp and we're both enjoying it. It is good fun and as Mike says, it can be a bit addictive.
If you are serious about it, the best thing to do is find a ringcraft class local to you. They will teach you how to handle Max and train him to stand properly.

Failing that, how far away is his breeder? I'm sure they'd be really pleased to hear you might show him and would give you some lessons on how to do it!

His breeder has only had the one litter.
I'll contact a local ringcraft i think, as we definately need a bit of help!

Well done you guys. As Allyson said, be proud. We also do quite a few local companion shows and usually come away with something. Our proudest moment was with Rudi last year, he got best sporting, from a huge entry of thirty +, then best av, which meant as an unbeaten he got best in show I know these shows are not in the same league as the opens etc but I do believe a lot of young contenders are "brought on" at these events. Wish us luck for Sunday, we are in two classes at the Brittany Open, only our second outing at this kind of show. Last time we got a VHC and a third. all this with no ringcraft training, and it shows

Those Companion shows sound rather like our Ribbon Parades.
They are where new judges learn through opportunity to handle dogs and where we show our new pups or just go along for a nice day out and chat.
As long as the dog is purebred it can be shown.

MC, companion shows over here are open to all dogs. There are usually four pedigree classes, AV puppy, AV sporting, AV non sporting & AV open. BIS comes from these classes. Then come the "novelty" classes which are open to pedigree and your allsorts. These include things like waggiest tail, child handler, handsomest dog, prettiest bitch, best veteran, best rescue, best condition and dog the judge would like to take home. Most take place as part of a village fete or county show etc', you just turn up and enter. They are good fun and it's always nice to get a rossette. They are held under KC rules & regs and used to be known as exemption shows. Think that about sums it up.
Best wishes.

Our Ribbon Parades are run in usual show classes.
We can have stakes classes, group and specialty clubs would have
various types of stake classes.
I remember years ago in my region the local club got lots of flak from one particular well known personality who seemed to have a thing about purebred dog shows, he whinged publicly that cross breds should be involved too, so we advertised and held special stake classes for them and maybe 3 people turned up.
