CruftsThis has been discussed briefly, although I seem to have missed that thread until I read it just now
So I was wondering who is going to Crufts this year? I will be there at the weimaraner ring running the rescue stand. Please pop by to say hello. I won't be on the stand for the whole day, but probably for the majority. There will be 3 stands at the weim ring and the one I'll be at is for Independent Weimaraner Rescue & Rehoming Service We will have lots of goodies for you to buy with all proceeds going to rescue.
I'm going dogless this year because my breeder is the judge. So whilst I will miss not showing because I love showing at Crufts, it will make a nice change to not have a dog with me, leaving me free to do as much shopping as I like

I wish I was coming, Judge doesn't suit and no point in paying £200 to come down overnight on coach just for the day.(can't afford it anyway)
Hope everyone who is going has a great time

I am not sure if we are going either , the judge does not really suit our "type" IMO. Having only been to crufts twice , I have to say that I really enjoyed it apart from the overcrowding and the fact that you can't get out until 4pm - not good when you have a 9 hour journey home ahead of you .
Best of luck to all forum members who are making the journey and hope you all enjoy the day !!

Once more I watched Crufts tonight and once more got more and more annoyed as the gundogs did their thing.
The dog that won overall is a lovely little dog ,yes. A gundog ? Not on your Nellie !!! It was probably the "gundog" LEAST likely to be able to do a days gundog work. The dog that won the gundog group belongs in the toy group of dogs surely ?

Did you see the continuity bit with Topaz and Ellie?? We were driving home so have not; but took several phone calls telling me they were on - has anyone recorded it??!.
PS Ellie took a first in her class as well Whilst Catja who was there on a Discover dogs ticket was a star (well i thought so) in the HPR demonstration! she was getting her retrieve and talking to people and generally behaving like a puppy But all in front of a whole crowd of strangers!

Yes Sharon did take the bith ticket also with one of Freddys puppies who was out of the special puppy class so still only a baby both reserves went to Maxine.
I only saw the last half hour ov tv show when we got home will watch the rest later I know that Chris C and her weimarans were interviewed but dont know if it made it on.
Anyway I dident do anything in breed but........... am over the moon to say that Rumour was 2nd in the gamekeepers picking uo and beating class you could of knocked me over with a featherand for good mesure she got £30 of Chudley vouchers, I was beaten by another wirehair Moya Reeds Weigon there were 51 entered (it says on the Crufts they were all present) but there were only 29 there lol.
So I got Rumour a nice new ball cause she was a good girl

I sit here absolutely shattered after a long forty eight hours and long drive down and back home, however the Red rosette I have for Gunnars first in Post Graduate is giving me a warm glow.

Well done big hairy dog.
I have just had chance to watch coverage from last night thought it was dismal, it was gundog day afterall no coverage what so ever of gamekeeper classes. Would of thought it would of been better to put that on than ben fogal teaching his dog to be a pat dog .
TO make matters worst got we got home half way through tv coverage so 'pressed red' so we could watch the complete group judging only thing that come up was Peter Purvis doing agility
Caz

Thank you,
Yeah no coverage of the gamekeepers class was a bit of a shame.
The group was good though some of the dogs seemed to have had a long day, Freddie had stepped up a gear in the group compared to the breed classes striding out on a loose lead whereas earlier Sharon was having to rein him in a bit.
Great turnout in the Wires as well, it was good to see.
Maxine and Peter done well too, Timo was on form looking great and flashy, definately one to watch, imo should be his ticket next year.

Personally I thought that considering it was supposed to be about gundogs the coverage given was abyssmal. I did not switch on the telly to see Ben Fogals dog get petted or patted !!! The presenters and some of the so called experts made comments that I would have loved to have been able to immediately challenge.
I actually find it insulting that the dog that won overall is called a gundog.
There were breeds such as the Irish Red and White Setter at that show which have struggled back from the brink of extinction both in the showring and actually working. It would have been worthwhile talking to some of their owners instead of watching Ben Fogal go Ga - Ga over his bitch !

We must not loose sight of the fact this is a dog show for show dogs - it is not a show for working dogs. It can never be - it must never be. The rules of the game are set by the Kennel Club; we choose to enter, to win we have to play by their rules. You would not expect an athlete specialising in the heptathlon to always beat every specialist athlete of the individual areas? Likewise you would not expect to come in from working in the garden, wash your hands and go to a wedding without first sprucing up and putting on your posh clothes.
So for me I am happy how it is, dogs that cannot do a days work and breeds that no longer have the opportunity (how many bulls are baited these days?) are kept alive; - what is sweet however is to see so many dogs that are capable of a good days work competing and winning, and winning well.
If you want a champion working dog you have to trial it, if you want a champion conformation dog you have to show it. If you want both you have to do both.

Guy
I dont have a problem with show dogs being show dogs and working dogs being working dogs, I was just saddened like lots of other people to see that on gundog day they chose to show so much other rubbish(like bf making his dog a pat dog) after all it is a lab would of made more scence if they showed him attempting to do some gundog training.
I was lucky to do well as my dog was looked on as a working dog and did well.

We had a surreal day, it started with some badger baiting in the dark and me carrying my dog down to the barn as he was unable to walk and crying out in pain, I half expected to be covered in blood when we got to the barn and Kath and I where trying to figure out the best way to get hold of the vet (it was well before 5:30 am at this point) Cleaned the dog up and no blood, checked him out and no obvious pain but he was hobbling around on three legs. To be fair to Harley he is a very stoic dog, I've seen him with deep 3"+ gashes bleeding everywhere and no reaction so I was convinced this had to be serious as he was in such a bad way.
Over the next hour or so he steadily improved and was wandering around so we made the decision to go and watch and Harley would be benched (anyone who has seen him at a show knows he really isn't bothered about being benched, he just sleeps the day away)
Kath followed me down and said that she could see no lameness as he walked beside me and even though we arrived really late our class hadn't been judged. Kath had a few practice goes and her friend could see no problems, so we decided to line up with the rest but to withdraw if he was unsound. Amazingly he came away with a third in mid limit, the most senior class he has been in
A truly bizarre day, I had planned on catching up with other forum members but was exhausted! Well done to those that did so well!

My twopenneth .
BBC Crufts coverage is for Joe Public and not for people who are seriously interested in dogs. It tries and IMHO usually fails to show people what they can do with their dogs as a snapshot and is 'light entertainment' only.
Crufts itself is a showcase that the KC runs to make money. Within that there are opportunities for breeds to be shown to the general public, activities can be demonstrated again to show how versatile dogs can be in that things like HWTM are designed to appeal to an audience that may not consider traditional routes of training. Also consider how many people you know who will happily pay to train their dogs at agility, flyball, HWTM etc, often driving miles to get there while they could tramp the fields for free . At least though the dogs that do these activities are channelled and usually fit as opposed to bored, destructive or in rescue.
Then there are those who are trying to promote breeds and develop them, breeders discreetly advertising their wares, people like me who are possibly shallow in the fact they like winning the odd rosette and getting to Crufts only to wonder where the money went for two pieces of card and some pretty ribbon .
I enjoy showing although I don't do my boys justice, I was proud of my pup who managed the bustle so much better than he might, I like meeting friends and having a good day chatting.
I also enjoy learning how to work my dogs, I would not be trying this lifestyle without getting a dog worthy of winning his prize at Crufts yesterday (Mugi).
It would be great to see working dogs showcased properly but again IMHO this is where Gamefairs and the like come into their own. As there seems to be some controversy about the BASC Gamekeeper Classes at Crufts (and the docking ban will probably make this worse) - which incidentally Mugi and I missed as our breed classes where late starting , perhaps there may be a place for conformation showing to be incorporated into the CLA Gamefair rather than Crufts?? We all agree that in certain breeds there is a divergence between show and working dogs and perhaps moving away from Crufts but having KC endorsed confirmation classes in a promotion of the working environment type event would be of more benefit to all????
As for the American Cocker, I haven't watched the judging or seen the BBC coverage but while the dog is classified as a Gundog, whatever we feel personally I guess it has every right to win the group if the judge on the day feels it was the best dog there.

CruftsSome people have asked for pictures of my GWP, here is one taken at Crufts where he took first in post graduate. For those interested I will post others of him in a more natural environment when I can get round to it.

Well done all of you with all your success's, not least of all you Caz, whats the odds of arriving in the car park at the same time with a forum member
Just thought I would also plug the LMs own little star, Erin who managed to get herself on `primetime TV' on the `One Show'....Twice and for taking best puppy.
Well done Guy, I didn't stay for the judging but was most impressed with your such well behaved trio of Brits on the bench, not seen if the footage of them playing with the munster has made it passed the editing sweet, ( My legs are in there somewhere )
Sorry to hear of your early morning troubles Mike, I did look around the Weims to see if I could find you, My munsters have a fascination with badgers, I think its how they move over the ground, and they don't seem to realise that badgers don't want to be retrieved And of course badgers don't realise that its not a good idea to bite a munsterlander . Luckily I now recognise the sounds of badger encounters ( its usually in the pitch black) and can get there pretty quick to break up the encounter before it gets serious

Was good to see you Peter and I had no ideal what the day was going to bring. I have been entering the game keeper classes for years and had never been even short listed before great to know she was liked by a working person as thats where by heart has been for a while rather than showing.
It was also brillent for Moya Reed who beat me with her bitch and won the same cup that she had won before with her grand mother.

Thanks everyone for your kind words on Freddy's success at Crufts. As previously he so loved the extra space in the main ring as it gave him ample opportunity to show off his great movement
As Caz said his 11 month old daughter won the BCC, which incidentallly her mother Biwindi won her first ever CC at Crufts, and another Freddy son won Puppy Dog and got moved up the line to be considered for the RCC.
Lisa Jones' Wirehairs also picked up some awards in the Gamekeepers class as well as in the breed classes.
Brenda's Busche looked lovely in the group ring and his big stride ate up the ground very easily.
The Golden has his SGWC for his qualifier although I do believe that he is used for picking up as is most of her dogs.
Really manic there today but then Saturday's are always the worse and working and pastoral breeds are always busy. Tomorrow looks likely to be just as busy - oh the joys of Crufts

You are right Peter about there being alot of discussion on another forum about prizes being with held in the game keeper classes.
I was only down there for my class but someone has done an anyilis of the results and card given and it seems very strange.
The male judge gives cc and the female judge is a ft judge and I dont know how much showing she has been involved in, apparently letters are going to be sent to ask for an explanation perhaps they were wrongley advised. As far as I am aware these classes arnt qualifing classes so there seems little point in withholding awards.
I am like you a bit cynical even more so as none of the keepers classes were shown this year but then thats down to the bbc and not Crufts management, but just think how many more trade stands they could get in that aera.
This year the tail docking issue dosent seem to have had much impact on Crufts and it was nice to see so many docked breeds making it onto the short lists of the groups. But I imagin that within the next couple of years there is going to be a reduction in entrys in the keepers classes as most working people are still having their dogs docked so will be unable to enter. And that will just leave the retrivers and setters.

I do think the BBC presentation was better this year. Seeing all the Breed winners was excellent, and Ben Fogle is actually very pleasant on the eye. It would have been good to see his dog working as well as just being a PAT dog although that is certainly commendable.

When competing in a show you are only "on" for 10 minutes,if that. What do you do for the rest of the day ? At the only dog show at which I personally showed my dog, I was "on" first thing in the morning. What on earth was I supposed to do for the rest of the day? Even I get fed up blethering after a while and the stalls don't hold much interest for me.
At the two most recent shows I've attended the most interesting part of the day for me has been to at last see a breed or two I have never seen in the flesh before. I also like to question the owners of these dogs as to their working strengths and weaknesses. I do this with my usual diplomacy and delicacy of course !!!

apparently the mix up with the awards in the game keeper ring happened as the judges were told at the start of the day that there were only 3 rosettes for each class and no mention of the prize cards for 4th and 5th, by the time it was sorted it was too late to award the places for the eariler classes. A real shame for those that went home without a cord who should of that them
Caz
ps very disopointing coverage in the shooting times not even the class awards

what a shame that they weren't awarded. Congratulations to the winners!!
We enjoyed our day despite a few minor problems and it was interesting to see the dogs and their owners all spit and polished although i did wonder how many of the dogs have actually done more than a days work in some classes.
The keepers rings seem to have lost their raw edge that they had the first time i entered in 2006 they look more like the breed rings now. I found that a pity really as I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the more jolly keepers rings.
We had a really odd day to start to the day with bonnie being scratched for coming into season early, a mating which went great and then just when I thought we'd be in luck to take her she trod on something and cut her foot open & was hobbling, so she'd stayed at home but we did still take Graf on his first crufts outing.
Anna picked him up the day before after an extended holiday with me and he'd been for a swim in the Thames on the wednesday night, ending up having a bath in one of the service stations in the early hours of Thursday morning. So he was all soft and shiny
He went into the ring and made a bee line for me on the way round so I had to hide behind on of the pillars, the ring steward then trod on his tail just before the judge went over him. In all fairness it really threw him and to have another stranger then go over him and try to grope his balls was just a bit too much for him to deal with straight away.
We didn't get much time to do anything really despite plans to shop you definitely need more than one day to see everything
