Dewclaws have been removed before sale of the dog/pup. Those little claws on the side [usually] of just the front legs. Some breeds have them on the back legs as well ie Pyreneans.

We don't usually take them off Brittanys but I used to take them off my Cocker pups at the same time as doing their tails.

Hi Annie, I noticed the Bracco pup on Sunday at the training class had dew claws on the hind legs too. Her owners say for that breed if they are born with them they get left on. I wouldn't have thought this was a good idea for a gundog.

Hi Jan, The pups owners are getting another one of the same and are then going to bring two of them to the classes. I thought they would find it difficult enough to train just one. I asked what they liked about the breed and they said they used to have a bloodhound and like hound type dogs.
They could have had Buck - bloomin' hound of the Baskervilles!

I'd ask some mean they have left them on some mean they have taken them off. weimaraners take them off but some breeders especially pet don't bother.

This is what Bracco standard says on Dewclaws - not sure if double dewclaws means both on front or one set front one set rear.................

It means what it says Annie, two sets front and two sets back [on each leg] so there are two claws on each leg, as in one more on each leg than normal.....just like the Pyrenean Mountain Dog and other of this ilk. Don't you have the standards in front of you [and you a Cruft's judge] Mind you using an excuse like 'she has been on a runnning holiday' might explain it

Hi there
My Bracco Ruby was born with dew claws and they were left on. My other girl Stella wasnt born with them so no problems there.
They are a real hassle to deal with. Effectively you have to keep the nails cut very short or they grow long into hooks that just get caught and can cause serious injury. I'm lucky, my Ruby has had this done from the day I got her and tolerates it very well - as long as she gets a biscuit or a bit sausage afterwards. My other x collie Bazil also has dew claws on his rear legs and because he is a rescue he wont let me cut them. To be honest they have grown to a short length and dont appear t have grown any longer. I dont know if cutting them just encourages them to grow.
Ruby has been fine with her dew claws. She is in all sorts of terrain and I have never had a problem so far. Touch wood!!!!!
I've never seen a bracco with double dew claws although I hear that they do occur and are left!!!!
Kind regards
Annie

Hi Tashap
I thought they only took them off the back legs - not the front. I know that all my friends weims have had their dew claws removed from the back legs.
All my dogs have got their front dew claws but only Baz and Ruby have back ones.
Does anybody know?

All the ones that I have seen remove them from the front, I've only seen a couple of dog with dew claws on the front usually rescues or in a couple of dogs specifically left on.
