Ducks on waterHi,
I was wondering if you would expect your dog to point duck floating on a pond? When I say pond I am talking about flooded pockets on grassland rather than a pond below ground level.
Many thanks,
Tony

I would not use the word "expect" but I would be surprised if mine did not.
Dogs will sight point on damn near anything and if due to the lie of the land only the scent was reaching my dog then I would expect it to point on that gamescent - if the dog had some experience of duck scent and of what it belongs to.

That's true Bill, my GWP would, when over at my friend's, point at the fish in the tank and also at a table lamp with birds painted on it

Just this morning as we ran alongside the river you could see Freddy take "scent" and turn left handed up to the top of the bank. As he got to the top of the bank he stopped (to the flush) just as two ducks lifted off the river.
So he didn't staunchly point them, but he certainly didn't see them, but he did catch the scent of them which stopped him from running on down the headland. In this instance we were the right side of the wind to give Freddy the chance to wind them before they took off.

Why shouldn't a dog point at ducks on water - the scent is the same. I notice that my dogs do not point if there are dozens or hundreds of ducks in front of it. They have much the same reaction as they give to "farmyard pheasants" in a release pen.......which isn't much reaction at all.
How much this has to do with me only working my dogs on "wild" pheasants and wild ducks, I really could not say.
