Just wanted to add to what Mike has said, before I lock this (that's if I can figure out how to lock it, seeing as I made this forum about 2 hours ago and don't have the foggiest how to do anything yet... )
Whatever we each think about ecollars, I believe we can learn a lot from our US colleagues. Just as an example, I recently received a great book on retrieving drills, ordered from the US. Of course the book refers to times when the ecollar "should" be used, but it's totally possible to do the drills, without the ecollar element, and using positive reinforcement.
If we UK folk, on this board, come across as being vehemently offensive and insulting to anyone who says they use an ecollar, the US folk (who almost all use them) just won't come here any more. I think that would be a loss to this board and a shame because, even if many of us don't/won't use ecollars, there is a lot to learn from other elements of training over there. And, who knows, maybe some US folk will be persuaded not to use them - but they can only be persuaded if they keep coming back!
Feel free to talk about ecollars and to debate them, but please keep it factual and not personal - thanks
