false pregnancyRunour is now 23 month old and had her second season end of may after the first she had swollen boobs but this time has gone to to produce milk, she seems her normal self otherwise. I have kept males for years so this is all a bit new to me I am going to mention it to my vet when she has her boosters, what are others peoples experiances? I dont want to go down the spaying road at the moment as I want to keep my options open to perhaps have a litter later.

My springer has really bad phantoms and I am loathe to spay her due to coat problems so I am trying to hold off as long as I can. All I do is reduce her food and exercise her more. I remember my first experience of a phantom and the vet gave her an injection but I've never been offered one since and I just do what I said.

Pulsatilla, a homeopathic remedy from Dorwest Herbs can help, as can Evening Primrose Oil which I buy from Tesco.
After Whistle's 2nd season she seemed to go really flat and I worried it was her hormones and that if they were all over the place it could develop into a phantom. So I reduced her food like Helen and put her onto EPO, no phantom ever appeared

I don't know any cures for phantom pregnancies but I do know how much bother they can cause. I had a labrador called Lady who had phantoms and she was "mumsy" at any time, phantom or not. When I brought my first ever Brittany pup home at 8 weeks, Lady, who was having a phantom any way promptly produced milk. The Brittany puppy, who'd been weaned for weeks thought this was bloody marvellous and latched onto the milk bar at every opportunity. I can't remember for certain but I think she was nearly 12 weeks old before I finally managed to persuade her she was a big girl now!

I'm sorry to interrupt this thread again but a question has just occured to me. If a bitch has a phantom pregnancy and produces milk, would that milk still contain the antibodies that can give young pups some immunity from disease? If so would this tend to cancel out the innoculations an older pup receives?
My apologies again for interupting.

I think the antibodies in the milk are contained only in the colostrum which is the milk first produced after a bitch gives birth. If she hadn't just given birth, the milk wouldn't have colostrum in it. (Right?? Or the general idea?)
