Feeding while working

Now Mugi doesn't have to work hard as such but I need some advice please.

We had to scratch our day beating until I can figure out how to feed him as yesterday he was 'diagnosed' with a degree of liver failure. So far he has no symptoms and this has been found on blood tests, one value is somewhat elevated and the other is double what it should be. Poor boy also has some renal failure on urine testing too but that is more easily managed. He needs retesting in 3 months and I want to do the best for him in the meantime.

He is raw fed and my vet is happy for him to continue with some modification so I am planning his normal feed regime and think I have a plan.

What I now need to figure is what to feed when he is out in the field all day be it for training or hopefully getting him out beating.

I am thinking of giving him a small meal of fatty lamb or beef mince with white rice for breakfast, similar for lunch (if he has an opportunity to stop) and then feed him a third supper meal with longer lasting energy availablity. What I need are some ideas of what I could substitute for the lunch meal if I won't be back at the car - something that provides pretty instant energy so his liver doesn't have to work too hard.

All ideas welcome please Smile .

How about something like this Sue.

I bought Nupro to help get coat back on Freckles after her pups. Complete and utter waste of £18. Made no difference whatsoever. I gave her the horrid smelly stuff religiously for 6 months. All it did was make her a fussy eater for as long as she was getting it. Her coat only came back in a few months ago and now she's in season again!

That's interesting Annie. I would rather feed Mugi something than give a drink really. I guess I could make him a little 'burger' that starts frozen as it will be defrosted by lunch anyways.

Ummm, not sure why a dog would need an electrolyte supplement when they don't sweat.

Although this may not be applicable to Mugi (due to health) studies have shown optimum response is feeding 24 hr prior to expected exertion, our dog hunt best on an empty stomach and there is a bunch of evidence that there noses are keener as well.

During a working day / shot over day / trial day I feed Harley Kronch Pemmikan. Which IMHO works very well.

Your idea of giing him a small meal of fatty meat is good, any exertion over a minute or two (can't remember which) is fueld primarily by fat. I am not so sure about giving the rice however as it is principally a source of carbs and whilst useful for recovery, the burning of carbs in a dog that is active causes waste products that can cause them to fatigue.

The Kronch should fit your requirement for good easy source of calories Smile

Thanks Mike. As you indicate Mugi is an old lad with the health issue so I would not hunt him on an empty tum even if he worked best that way. Will get some Kronch for him - ta.

Sue IIRC P+P is horrendous if only buying one bar, drop me a PM and i'll sort you out with some to try.

Been looking at some of the references for this and also some posts on another forum.

Interestingly it seems that performance bred dogs can be mildly hyper-glycemic so tend to have slightly elevated blood sugar levels compared to non performance bred dogs when fasting (hence the improvement mentioned above) however non-performance bred don't exhibit this trait. So as with everthing it doesn't necessarily work with all dogs, you need to suck it and see.

I don't know nearly enough about dietary requirements for dogs to give any advice on this. I can only say I found it beneficial to feed hard working dogs on raw red meat. If I thought more was required during the day itself I used to give the dog half a Mars Bar Rolling Eyes I can't remember who told me this was a good idea.

What a waste of a choccy bar Bill, I wouldn't even give Adam half a Mars Bar Laughing

I use Kronch Pemmikan too since Des recommended it last season and find it really good.
