For Bill

Mugi has retired from his rather too short working life today.

Aged 12.5 he now has significant heart failure and even if he is still with me next season he will not be fit enough. I have been lucky to have a shoot that would accomodate a totally deaf dog this season and who let me work him on a harness and flexi.

Loaded into the Beaters Van today - one of 15 dogs out (including Chase)

Waiting to start a drive - the attitude is sumed up beautifully and thankfully he doesn't know he is now retired.

Thought you might like to see Vicky's Gt Grandson still keen to do his job!!

Oh bless, Happy Retirement Mugi! Very Happy

What are you going to say to him when you take Chase and Piper out without him Sue Question  Question

Mugi's expression is so like his mum's in that second picture - brings a lump to my throat.   Happy retirement old man!

I have the same lump in my throat Liz. A great and a grand old dog. In the short time you have had him Sue, he has had a great time discovering what he was put on earth to do.

I wish him a happy retirement and I thank you Sue for giving him such pleasure.
He does, so much, remind me of Vicky.

Aww, bless him.  You really have given him the best season of his life.

How will his heart problem affect him?

Mugi's a great ambassador for the breed.  I'm sure Sue will do everything possible to ensure he has a fulfilled retirement.

Mugi has a heart murmur and cardiac failure so he is coughing a lot trying to shift the fluids on his lungs. As he also has renal and liver failure there is a chance that the drugs that will help his heart will impact on the other problems he has. I am lucky my vet supported me finishing the season before trying to find a balance of meds for Mugi - he goes tomorrow to see what we can do for him.

At the moment he is coughing lots, going blue round the edges when running and if he over-extends himself he needs to lie down before he falls down! All classic heart failure things really - sad to see as his will to work is undiminished but his body is letting him down.

I hope we can find meds that will at least stop the coughing even if it doesn't much improve his exercise tolerance as he can't rest as much as he needs when he is struggling for breath.

On the otherhand he remains a tough little cookie, a great game finder and with such a zest for life.

One great thing for him is the fact I have access to the shoot grounds again out of season so he will still get to his favourite place for his exercise Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy .

That boy certainly landed on his feet when you found each other Sue.  Happy retirement Mugit - time to take a well earned rest.

just think the older he gets the more accurately he will be able to remember things that never happened.

How great that he had so much fun, so late in his life.  Let's hope you can keep him comfortable for as long as poss Sue.
