Frank the Plank & and Skye Pie join The Woozle!

Woozle's mum suggested I join this forum.    I am the Estate Administrator for Lees Court Estate near Faversham and co-manage the shoot as well as organising the picker's up.
My two are Weimies - having had Golden Retrievers prior, I had from a child always had a inkling to work the Grey Ghost having watched them when we used to beat down in Sussex.   Several years ago I was approached by a breeder to take on a re-home - a 1yr old male called Neptune Blue (Jess at home)  He was from a working line (Cardinal Syn).  I learnt so much - that you can not train an HPR the same as a retriever - big mistake - thankfully I had help from Charlie Scott a local dog behaviourist who gave me tips and I ended up with a super working dog that I could trust.  He even was able to stand at the front with me when I was hosting and I could put him on runners with out any doubt that he would behave and come back with it - sometimes being gone for some considerable time but he always came back with an pricked bird of the same variety he was sent for - so one can only assume he got what he was sent for.  I worked him for 5 years and then he became very ill having been picking up on a duck shoot (that is another long story)  He died of lympathic cancer in under 2 months of having been on that shoot.  However, the year before I had rehomed Skye - a rather nervous bitch, known to have bitten, not great with other dogs... oh I had my hands full, but working and training her has been her saving.  She has never shown aggression to another human, but I would not trust her unsupervised with small children.  She is still not great with other dogs, but will ignore them herself and only has a spat if they invade her space - nose up bum is a no no.  Whilst working she is good - but she has to be watched at the end of the day when people and dogs are milling - everyone on our shoot knows this and we all work together.  She is steady and can, like Jess, work with me out the front when I am hosting - although my favourite place is 600 yards or further behind the guns!  Then this January we decided to replace Jess and have two dogs - this is when a 3month old Frank the Plant came in to our lives - He is a big Weimie and every so enthusiastic.  He loves dummy work and is totally socialised and although naughty is, I hope going to be a fab HPR as long as we can control the enthusiasm
So here we all are!  Look forward to learning more about everyone and picking a few minds over training issues.

Welcome, Liz! and to FtP and the gorgeous Skye

tempted to cut-'n-paste your lyrical email to me when Skye did everything right on the day?  Peeps on here are always pleased to hear success stories...

Hi & welcome   great intro
Liz Roberts

Fogdog - more than happy for you to cut'n'paste the Skye day.  We also have stories of when it doesn't go quite right and you wished you had a shovel and could dig the hole yourself to crawl in too!
FtP is with me today and has just brought me a purtid dead thrush from the gardens - much coaxing and he gave it too me - stank to high heaven with nasty green ooze - swilled his mouth out and thrown him back in the car - have washed my hands too!
Thank you for the warm welcome
Helen

Welcome to the board.  Sounds like you've did a great job with Jess and are doing a great job with Skye.

Welcome Liz and I too liked the intro  Very Happy  Very Happy

I always thought the GWP needed a special type of owner but reading your emails and Fogdog's emails I rather gathered a Weimaraner owner is also "special"  Laughing  Laughing

One of mine once brought back a bloated putrid rabbit and she really didn't want me to have it as the other dogs were milling around waiting for it to be given up.  I have to say I was mighty glad that she didn't sink her teeth into that wobbling body as I could well imagine how putrid that was Exclamation

Welcome Liz.

Great to hear your success stories.  I also have a dog which needs "understanding" and am still learning how to cope with some of those situations.
