gun nervy

after an incident with fireworks my viz has gone a bit gun nervy. i can get him close to shot (5/10yrd) by allowing him to run in on dummys with accompanying shot. and have got him to 40yrd ish with gentle distractions (food/another dog).

just wondering if anyone here has any experience with such 'problems' and what methods they used to get over it.

thanks,
T

Hi
It happened to me a few years ago after an accident with of all things a low flying fighter practicing in Scotland, The main thing is the dog was ok before so it was more a case of renewing its confidence over a period of time starting in my case with just walks with the gun empty, then moving on to opening and closing the gun whilst making a fuss of the dog, If that went ok i had someone fire shots whilst i allowed the dog to run in, I have to say it was a long slow process and the final thing i did was to shoot rabbits that the dog was hunting without any restraint. That finally did the trick and the penny finally dropped and i had another 10yrs service from her without problem.
If however the dog was nervous about guns before it can be deeper rooted.
I hope this is useful.

That’s odd mate mine is the same, must be a faulty litter!!

Mine was ok till end of last season someone shot right over the top of her, since then she has been nervous, not shaking or wining but just sticking to my leg and won’t hunt away from me.

I’ve not exposed her to any gunshot since then, but on the odd occasion when I have been out training or walking and there has been someone pigeon shooting several fields away she has been the same! This has happened when my wife has been walking her so she doesn’t associate it we just me.

I have tried not reacting to her behaviour! Is this right or should I be making a massive fuss of her?

Did you react to the person that shot over her Question
Mine hates fireworks hides under my sons bed, we had a bad November/December, gunshot not a problem though when it was heard in the distance he reacted & wanted to go in any other direction but i  just kept on walking telling him its ok and hes a good boy not overly fussing, then when we get to were they were shooting, not right on top of them, slip lead on & sit for a while & watch moved of when he was calm & looking around & felt confident it took a while by the end of the season he was running toward the sound of distant shot( we have gas guns going off all day long at the moment not fussed on his back feet up snoring away  Rolling Eyes

I did

We were working a field of stubble and she was hunting well at distance, she flushed about 7 pheasant’s mixture of hen and cock, the gun missed every one of them!!

He was a very inexperienced gun and I did have a word in his shell like after the incident!!

I was annoyed that we had worked the field; with the dog quartering superbly pushing all the birds to the flushing point without them flying and when we did flush not one bird was hit!!!!
windem bang

A very likely cure for a dog that behaves like that is to allow the dog to run in for every bird that is shot for a while and to try very hard to have most of the shots = a downed bird.

My G.S.P. ,Taz was terrified of fireworks, dummy launchers, thunder and starting pistols but you could fire off as many shotguns as you liked within inches of her. Shotguns just made her more eager to retrieve. She'd been taken picking -up at 8 months of age and allowed to run in . I'd stayed well back from the guns and just let her off lead every time a bird came down near us that she had seen.  She taught herself to ignore the bangs while she was hunting and to love them if a retrieve looked likely !

Of course you then have to reteach steadiness   ................. Exclamation  Laughing
