Gundog ClubAnybody got any opinions?
Somebody at training said there was a new course starting locally, its £120 for 7 training sessions and the test.
Looking at what you are expected to do its pretty basic perhaps good for the first timer, but cant see any point really if you are going to push your dog to a higher leval, perhaps us HPR people are more inclined to go on an compete in working tests ect then the Lab and spanial people they are aiming for?

Hi Caz, that works out to about £17 per training session. I don't know how many are in the class but 1 to 1 training is often £25 to £35 per hour. Personally I feel that 2 or 3 dogs and handlers makes a good class. A single dog should not I.M.O. have to have 60 minutes of training /pressure. The other class members break up the hour, the dog feels less pressurised but is perhaps more wound up to work by the actions of the other dogs. AND it costs the individual handler less ! I think it's quite a good deal.
Before anyone asks - I am not a Gundog Club trainer, I do not meet their requirements, so I have no direct interest in this !
I only know personally one person who took her H.P.R. pup to compete in the test. It passed and the handlers only complaint was that there was too much game around ! I'm thinking of running Buck in one of those tests just to get him among game !

Hi Caz ,
I registered some time ago and was going to do the grade 1 test with Millie when she was 6 months. I never got round to it for one reason or another (mainly difficulty in organising a test). The grade 1 test is very basic but the idea is (I'm sure you know) gradually work upto grade 6 level which if passed is basically your dog upto scratch and ready for the shooting field or possibly novice field trial.
My one gripe with the club is the fact that even now 2-3 years on , the HPR side of things is slow to materialise. Maybe I'm wrong but I think there is only a level 2 test now for HPR's , levels 3,4,5 and 6 have not yet been devised. I'm sure Pippa will correct me if I'm wrong but other than that I think the club is a pretty good idea. I've not logged on for a while so maybe things have improved over the last year or so.
Barry.
