Hello from NorthamptonshireHi there, I got my first ever HPR, a wirehaired Vizsla bitch last year. She is 16 months and we are soon to be assesed for the Gundog Club grade 2 (eek). She is steady and as I was told 'has potential' but she has a very hard mouth (which I don't know how to remedy). I feel a bit by myself as this HPR training is all new to me. Anybody in the Northamptonshire area want to meet for a bit of advice...unfortuantley my trainer hasn't touched on any Hunting or pointing elements so I am completely clueless.
I sound like a bit of a sad case, but I don't feel I could join a club/association due to my lack of knowledge as a handler

Clubs and associations are there for new people to learn about their chosen breed. We have a number of members who don't own a Brittany but who may in the future. Join the WHVA and you will make friends, join in events and you will learn.

I know how you feel. It took me years to pluck up the courage to join in with some breed club activities.
I can remember in the early days when I got the pup I was signed up for two or our breed clubs. Well I felt like a complete outsider, the newsletters didn't mean anything to me, it all seemed very cliquey and worse of all I didn't have a clue about training. I ended my memberships and did my own thing for 6 years .
It was only when I got into 'forum life' that I was encouraged to join in some things. I felt a complete novice but I just reminded myself that everybody had been in my place at one time or other and hey I wanted to learn.
How times have changed. I am now membership secretary of the Weimaraner Association and speak to and encourage new members not to feel left out. It's only taken me 12 years .
Go for it - you owe it to yourself and your dog. Good luck.

Hi
I have a 6 mth pld HWV plus 5 weimaraners. You really need to find a good HPR trainer as imo she should be hunting and pointing by now, I know from experience with my 2 year old who I only taught retrieving, obedience etc how important this is. They really need to start hunting out really early. If you private message me I can give you details of someone in the Northampton area but not sure how far he is from you. Also you should join the HWVA and HWVCGB as you can get lots of info from them as well as this forum of course and dont be afraid of going along to other clubs and societies, I know its a bit daunting but we all have to start somewhere.

Hello
I'm on the Northants/Leics border and only 30 mins from the outskirts of Northampton so if I can be of any help then do pls email me. It is daunting to start with but we all were novices at one stage. The HWVA is very good at organising field events and Richard is very encouraging so do pls join the club.
Who has determined, and by what method, that your bitch is "very hard mouth"?
Pointing varys tremendously - some point early some don't so I certainly wouldn't be worried about not pointing at 16 months. I would be more aware of the need to explain hunting and get you both "hunting".
Shirley - Pls do share your experience of a HPR trainer in Northampton area as I'm not aware of any

Oh sorry Shirley - I thought you were suggesting someone in Northampton for ellisjo to have some "training" which made me wonder how lacking we are for trainers in our area. If it wasn't for the help my falconer friend gave me in the early days I would have never made the progress I have now done in working dogs.

I think we lack trainers in most areas I am so thankful that i'm not far from Trevor Rigby. Don't think I would ever have progressed without him.
