Help needed with quartering!

Both Blu and I just haven't seemed to master this!  Rolling Eyes

We have only done it a couple of times at training but not really been 'taught'.  I get the idea of what we need to do but when it comes to it Blu just looks like he has no clue what he is doing and neither do I! Embarassed

On our first WT at the Bracco club the judge was really good and explained to me what it was I needed to do and Blu responded well to me and he actually hunted.  He will use the wind and do the zigzag pattern and follow the directions of my arms and stuff but sometimes I will let him off and he will start well and then you can see it in his eyes that he is just messing around!  Evil or Very Mad

He did this at the test on Saturday.  I must admit it was the first time I have got him to hunt in the woods but he just ran around like a lunatic!  He still followed my directions but at 100mph Shocked without the hunting part.

Is it just a case of practise, practise, practise, or is there something specific that I need to do with him?  I'm not sure he knows what he is looking for so he sees an opportunity to fluff about! Rolling Eyes  Confused

Come up the A32 one evening and I can show you and you can practice.  Cannot do tonight but tomorrow or Thursday would be OK any time after 5.30pm

Thats great! thanks Guy! Hopefully Thursday should be ok.  But will let you know if I can't make it. Very Happy

You'll have to let me know when to stop on the A32!! Laughing

How about 6pm - we could do a bit of quartering there and then move to another venue for a bit more and also a bit of retriever training - with retrievers Smile

I have a white freelander commercial, there is a large layby on both sides of the road, I will be in the western one.

If you do both venues we would finish about 9pm

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

There are certain aspects like quartering, that some people feel are separate tasks that can be taught separately. You can obviously have a plan, sorry must have a plan for these tasks but you need to remember that any person's method only works for them because of how they handle the dog in other situations. Even things like how you feed your dog can have an impact on how successful you will be with other aspects of training.
I have taken the liberty of including the link to my site where I deal with the training of a pointer. There is a little in it about quartering that may be of some use.
