Hi from IstanbulHi,
I am dog trainer and upland hunter. I do dog training with positive reinforcement mostly with clicker. I hunt woodcock over 20 years.
This is my pointing spaniel.

Maybe she is most tiny pointing dog in the world.
She is just 9-10 kg. She is flushing dog but I trained her to point when she was about 3 months old. She will start her hunting in next woodcock season this year.
This is my Deutsch Kurzhaar. I send him to my friend because he was not happy in city life.

There are many kind of game in Turkey. I am not interested in big game such as wild boar, deer, goat etc. but wild boar is very popular and possible to find huge wild boars all over the Turkey. We are on the migrant birds’ way. All kind of waterfowl game, woodcock and quail are most preferred games for hunters who like bird hunting in Turkey.
Our hunters don’t use flushing breeds. English pointers and setters are popular breeds in Turkey for upland game. We didn’t have any kennel club till few years ago and because of that we don’t have any system, which register pedigrees. In spite of this you can find many good working bred dogs in Turkey. Most of them have been adapted to Turkey’s conditions. You can even find docked English pointers in some regions. These pointers are get used to hunt in heavy cover and docking needed. Docking has been banned except hunting breeds a few years ago in Turkey. Our pointers are good retrievers. Our hunters also don’t use retrievers.
Our game is natural and wild. We have only 3 days (Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday) to hunt in hunting seasons. Hunting is closed other days of the week. There are bag limits for each game. For instance, such as 4 woodcocks, 10 quails bag limit each day. You can carry only one day bag limit in your car.

Hi Bill,
I am glad to be here. I think so there are a lot of people from Scotland in this forum. I had lived in Scotland. It is very nice country with nice people. I was not home sick there because I’m from the east of black see of Turkey and could find some similar things such as bagpipes, nature....
Hear our bagpipes and watch some hawking photos form the east of blacksea of Turkey.

Hawking is popular in east of blacksea of Turkey. They allow hawking only in this region and need special licence to catch the hawk and hunt by the hawk.
Hawkers need to catch a bird called gaco in order to capture the youg hawk.
Gaco is a small bird likes sparrow. Hawker needs a grasshopper and trap to catch this small bird. They put grashopper in this trap and put some loop made with horse tail. When the gaco comes for grasshoper horse tails catch the bird. Hawker free the gaco after catch his hawk.

Hawker should train his gaco to catch the hawk. Gaco can learn quickly to fly and after perch on the stick with some rope tied to its legs to attract the hawk. They put some cover made with leather on the gaco’s eyes to not see the hawk.
Hawker hold the stick with gaco on behind a net to catch the hawk.
Hawker catches only female and young hawks. Hawk older than a year is not suitable for hawking. There are many kind of hawk. Red, yellow, black, etc. Yellow hawks are better. Hawkers catch their hawks on august. All young hawks left their nest untill august.
See the how does the gaco stay on the stick.

When hawker gets his hawk start training and goes to quail hunting with his dog and hawk.
Sorry I couldn’t find better video for this section.
