Hungarian Vizsla Mucking around with retrieves.

Good Morning,

I am new to the forum and would appreciate some advice on retriever training my 20 month old  Hungarian Vizsla

He is excellent at finding blind retrieves and is an excellent marker, from some distance, problem is when he finds the dummies etc. he shakes his head furiously and mucks around with them and seems to please himself,  eventually running back to me and dropping the dummy 3 ft short, which is hugely frustrating !!!  Confused

I can live with the poor delivery for now its just I would like the 'mucking around' sorted asap

There is probably a simple solution to this (hopefully!) but this is my first gundog so am releatively new to all this

any advice would be hugely apprieciated.

Many Thanks

Rob.

if you turn your back on him and squat down when he is retrieving it to you - the chances are he will bring round in front of you and give it to you.

Does that make sense?

Yes will try it - I have just had him out retrieving a cock pheasant from the weekend with no problems, just need to tighten the delivery up, I have only just got him onto to cold game which he has taken to with no problems - thanks very much for the advice

I have found that using a retrieving lane made out of sheep netting against a dry stone wall helps too - start off with it not much wider than the dog and then increase the width slowly as the messing about stops. That way he has no where to go with it and if he tosses it about then he is going to whack himself. These are just things that i have found worked in the past - hope it helps.

You can buy a roll of that plastic road-diggers mesh from Wickes as well, or steal some! Wink

Now THAT is a brilliant idea - I've been trying to humph around a hugey roll of sheep wire.  My backs done in!
