I missed it.

I am gutted  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad .

Today Mugi had his first clean kill marked retrieve and I missed seeing him  Crying or Very sad . Thank heavens though for being in radio contact as a beater, the first I knew were two calls of "Sue, call your dog" which I did. Proud as punch Mugi came running up to me and let me take a lovely plump partridge  Cool  .

We had been working a christmas tree plantation which is overun with bramble so I was fighting through and had lost touch with him, apparently Mugi was on the periphery when he saw the bird shot and it fall into the trees. He ran out very true to where he had marked it, pushed into bramble cover, picked up the bird and carried it to me, he was not quite sure where I was hence the radio prompt. The chap who watched him has been a gamekeeper/shooter/beater for many years and he thought Mugi did really well for, as he put it a pup in his first season!!!!!!

Later in the day he also found his first pricked pheasant, he was very determined and in ensuring he had the bird firmly he did do some damage but I was again advised to praise him to the hilt and ignore the damaged breast (this by the chap who is chief picker up).

I so hope he can still work next season, my 11.5 yr old "pup" is doing fabulously and everyone on the shoot comments on his happy face as he learns more and more what the job is all about.

Well done you and Mugi! Very Happy  The picker -up who told you to ignore the torn chest of the pheasant was correct. Mugi is still trying to gain experience.

Well done Mugi (and you Sue for the work that you've put in with him).  You'll get another season out of him, he seems to be getting younger rather than older
