I must learn........ to trust my dog .
I am just back from a really nice weekend courtesy of the BCGB with training Sat and Show today.
Mugi and I were in the Intermediate Group for training and apart from one exercise he just didn't 'get' he did really well. He did a nice memory retrieve and with some help his presentation was much better than previously although not right yet. We then went on to a split retrieve which he has never done before, I nearly chickened out as he is on an excelerated learning path in someways and I don't want to stop him enjoying himself. He did it keenly and again presentation was much improved. As we are just getting back keen on dummies I used a rabbit dummy and a feather dummy for the exercises and towards the end of the day he was showing keeness for plain dummies so obviously he was bored cos it was too easy.
Chase (and Jans Merlin too) was in a difficult position. The Novice dogs were training on an enclosed tennis court and he found it boring, he had no interest in retrieving cos it was way too easy and all the youngsters spent time peeing and sniffing. If I had taken him to the intermediate class he would have been pushed too far and probably gone awol sniffing/playing and being disruptive.
The club has now adopted a graded training so we have 'homework' which should see Mugi in the Advanced class next time (well the trainer has faith in us ) and Chase & Merlin in Intermediate - we have till June to get there!!!!
Today was one of the Club Open Shows and Chase behaved much better than latterly coming 3/5 with Merlin winning the class. Mugi got a 1st in his class and I also had the pleasure of trying to handle madam bouncy aka Ghillie for Jan in a stakes class but MUM was way to obvious moving around the hall and a certain lady was rather distracted .

Nah Nah Nah....and who never showed us how to charge our clicker
AND who got placed anyway with Ghill
AND Auntie Annie had problems with her as well and as she is supposed to be a very experienced handler so stop picking on yourself, particuly as you may be handling her at Cruft's
AND we had a very good night down at the local pub where Auntie Annie did a very silly quiz which was won by some real showoffs called 'Second Sex'
AND Ghill went out and found the hidden retrieve and delivered it to hand....then went rabbit hunting after a very nice point
AND Joanne, our trainer for the obedience, tells me that Himself [and, I presume, Chase] is about to enter THE TEENAGE STAGE. This, according to Joanne, will last about two months by which time we shall enter the local rest home and everyone can send flowers and Belgian chocs to us while we recover
PS Homework....what homework

I think your trainer is wrong about the teenage stage lasting two months - more like two years ! Never mind you can visit me in the asylum !!!

Someone obviously didn't listen carefully enough to teacher , homework was to perfect the exercises we were working at at Intermediate so that come June we progress to the next stage as John had sectioned on the sheet we were given .
I think Chase has been a continual teenager since he hit about 5 months old and actually his behaviour is steadily (although very slowly) improving.
As for charging the clicker, I know I didn't but time just went too fast. I thought I would ask if I can have a short time slot in June (knowing Joanne will be there too so not as a trainer but perhaps a demo at coffee??) when I take a dog who hasn't used a clicker and show the basics of charging it and starting a new, basic behaviour for the dog. It would be easiest to use a youngster for a swift demo but perhaps at the October weekend I could do a bit more as a slot for people who were interested in learning a little more. Will ask John and see if I can fit something in, not necessarily related to gundog work but that would be fine if it was what was wanted - most behaviours are too complex though to show a quick 'snazzy' end product.
Almost final point - ME SHOW GHILLIE AT CRUFTS????? Are you trying to kill me???????? I am already taking valium contemplating Chase there, Liz is almost certainly going to show Mugi in Breed for me as Vet and Pup are too close time wise for me to settle little one after Mugi has been in. But Mugi is also doing Gamekeeper so I will be a busy bee.
Now for the final point......I would rather have alcohol, chocs and flowers in my mental institution please!!!!!!!!!!

Booze sounds good as well...
I was in two different classes last Saturday so must have missed the bit about homework No doubt it will come back to me at some point
Bill, you must have heard the one about 'hope springing eternal etc, etc?' I hadn't known that you are already in the asylum
You big wuss you....OF COURSE YOU WILL SHOW THE GHILL I'm a poor decrepit old [36] woman and need all the help I can get
If they have been teenagers for the last six months when do they get to finish the hooligan bit AND, more importantly, when do they grow up Mind you Ghill was sooo much easier....but she is female so it's not surprizing
Merlin is getting quite clever, he now waits for Ghill to retrieve something then takes it off her to give to me so he can get the reward Typical male lets the female do all the work then takes the credit
Sorry Peter, I've got to the stage where even I don't know what I'm on never mind telling anyone else so they can get it as well.

Yes, I thought the two months thing was rubbish too
he had no interest in retrieving | Quote: | that just isn't true. I took Merlin twice and he was retrieving the sock, my gloves, and teh scruffy canvas dummy every time. Ghill just wanted to find her Mum
Now off to bed as someone down there in Englandshire has given my a humdinger of a cold.

You cannot be serious. Are we really expected to train our dogs between now and June? They'll be expecting us to do more between June and October if we're not careful.
PS Another great week-end, great to see how the dogs are progressing.

Not at the moment she hasn't, there is only one there I think it was the chatting up she was doing on friday night at our local....she had three on the go, and one of them was my husband Brucie offered to take her to Rome for a dirty weekend IF his girlfriend didn't want to go, Tom offered to show her his vasectomy scar and Mike just bought her another drink I think the shock was to much for her immune system and it has gone to her head
