Insurance??My friend with working Labs was speaking about Insurance today and the cost so I thought I'd ask on here who has insurance if they have multi-dogs, which company, how much a month per dog, and whether they have paid out without question on claims.

I have changed to healthy pets this year cheaper than my other company but with better cover. I only have the one insured with thme and havent claimed yet but there has been some talk about it on nobs and people so far have found them good I think im paying £8pm.
My friend who dose obidence with her 5 collier and 1 gsd has a multi policy with tesco I think she has 3 or 4 dogs on it(not her oldier) and pays £30 od a month I will check with her next time I speek to her.

I only have one dog insured and I use DBI. One thing to watch out for is that not many companies will pay out for a working dog injured whilst doing work. I had quite a lot of phoning around to do before I found DBI (who do pay out for working dogs).
It's worth checking that your insurance covers working dogs!

We use petplan , I think we pay around £35 pm for 2 dogs. We had to claim for Logans OP last year when he had a torsion and have to say that the claim for over £1000 was dealt with swiftly and very professionally. I would recommend them although a wee bit on the pricey side.

we also use petplan £120 a month for 3 dogs they are very good and yes pricey but pay out very quickly - are covered for life with unlimited amount of cover.
i did have one of the dogs covered with M & S but was only covered for £7,000 per anum so i changed her over.
it is a bit of a minefield but i couldnt find any other insurer that had unlimited cover so i remain with petplan but if anyone knows different i would be happy to find out or at least my bank account would.

Would it not be better to put £1,440 into a high interest account every year and pay out when you need to?
Can't remember who mine are insured by - but do remember arguing that a i have a greyhound/ collie/ terrier mongrel - NOT a lurcher. They went for it eventually.

This is what I've done up till now but I have been thinking of insuring Allez if I'm working him and also as I'm moving to a more densely populated area

That's the theory that we're working on Ben. At least the money is ours until we have a problem.

We have 2 of ours insured with Healthy Pets. Have made a couple of claims and they have been pretty fast at paying. I have seen my premiums go up and up though.
The rest we just wing it and hope for the best as there is no way we would afford to insure them all.

You need to make sure that any policy you take out is a lifetime cover, in other words any illness is covered for the dogs life, not just for that year. I was insured with DBI but realised last year that they were only covered for one year for any condition.
Now I'm with Petplan for the 2 younger ones - who have a clear health record. Costs £38 per month for the 2 (includes multipet and OAP discount ).
Toby and Rosie are covered for 3rd party only. As Toby is now 13 realistically we will not go into any longterm intervention at the vets . It's a bit more of a gamble with Rosie but at 11 we couldn't change to another company, and DBI wanted around £55 per month for her

Thanks for all your input, I will check out the various companies mentioned, and any others I find, in order to insure Allez. I think I'll wing it for the others with whatever miniscule amount is left after the house sale

What do the asterix's next to ongoing cover refer to?

BritAnnie

Vet fees excess is £50, PL excess is £100

Means 'depends on cover selected' - I chose the Gold cover(highest level) for this quote.

Healthy Pets is coming out £1 cheaper per month for the same cover and excesses so I'm going for that.

cover for vet fees is low. I've got petplan and did have a marks and sparks policy for ayla but to be honest of the two although more expensive petplan is better and they pay up direct to my vet. Mines £40 per month per dog though which is a bit hard to swallow.
The multipet discount isn't worth much its about £1 when the new pup arrives though s/he will be going on petplan unless i can find a better insurer.

Healthy pets is quoting around £8 per dog - why are you paying £40 each dog? How much more cover are you getting than I quoted earlier on? HP pays vet direct too. Seems a helluva difference. Haven't investigated multipet discount as I don't think I'll insure the older ones - I can't afford it, will just have to rely on piggy bank for them.

mainly because of the life cover. Lots of the insurers will only do so much per year and then the cover stops... pet plan at least covers you for reoccurance and for lifetime rather than just one year.
We've not had any health problems with mine but after taking on a rescue that was a total health wreck that cost a fortune because he couldn't be insured I'm a lot more wary now.
