Lost Bracco

Hi All, Jacob is of my breeding is 3 years old and lightly built for a Bracco, his details can be downloaded from Doglost as below. Please forward his details to anyone you think may be able to help especially if they are in the Essex/ Cambridge Area. Thank you.  Kim Parris (my tel 01425 471104)

Hi All

It's been a hell of a day for Jon and I today.
Long story short, Jon took the 4 dogs out this morning early, and over the ridge of the hill unexpectadly encountered a huge herd of deer.
Jacob and Solly dissapeared with after 'playing' within the pack which had by then split into 2 directions. Solly and Jacob following one pack.
Jon ran after them, but they were too fast, and as we are surrounded with woods, eventually lost them both out of sight.
After a short while, thankfully, Solly came back the same way he went and we got him back safely.
Unfortunately there was absolutely no sign of Jacob, and ever since 9am this morning we've all been out tracking through the woods, fields and driving around all of the surrounding villages up to some 7 miles. We've had 2 friends out on their horses, as well as lots of walkers and dog walkers alike that have our number and were looking for us too.
So far nothing, and it's getting to be freezing outside. We're just about to go out for the last time, and drive round the fields via the farm tracks.

We just hope and pray that he is is someones garden, or garage, or a dense area where he can rest til the morning. More than anything, we just hope he's not lying somewhere hurt, even kicked by a deer, that's our main worry.

Please, please cross-post this to everyone you know, just in case they are around this area, or know someone that is -
I've put him on Doglost, but was wary of listing his Microchip No. in case someone could use it if they found him ??? should I put it on there ??
Anyone know ?
We're starting a fresh search tomorrow, and i'll let you know how we get on. Please think good thoughts for him.
Thanks all x

Thank you.

In my haste to post his details I didn't make it clear I am Jacobs breeder not his owner but am happy to be contacted with any information or suggestions. His full details and pictures of him can be found on doglost.

Thanks again Kim

I am also wondering the same.

Good luck.  Have been there.  Two days before return.

Jacob

Hi all,

I am jacobs owner after another long day searching and putting up posters/flyers.

Still no joy, not one siting.

We have a big search going tommorrow on with friends and people off the spin bracco groups.

Please can everyone keep their eyes peeled for our boy.
taz

Can't imagine what you are going through, good luck with your continued search tomoro.

Thanks lets hope we get a result

Jon
anniebrac

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this.  My thoughts are with you.  I know how difficult it is with this breed.  If I'm in the forest with my 2 and they take off on a scent trail or after deer, I always stay where I was when they left.  When Ruby was youngster I waited 45 minutes for her to return.  And she came running back, tongue hanging out and a big smile on her face.

All the best for tomorrow.  Will be thinking about you.

Best wishes

hi jon,

dont give up hope, he's out there somewhere, i read somewhere that once a bracco went missing for eleven days before being reunited with his owners.

glad to see the society has put up a notice and photo on their homepage.

Don't take this the wrong way, but have you contacted the local hunt Question
Not everyone knows what a Bracco is, and at first glance many would think that its a hound from the local hunt thats gone astray ( as they do Rolling Eyes ) and passed him on there, might be worth a phone call.
Peter

Hi peter,

yes we do have several hunts around here and have phoned all of them, also many of the riding clubs....just hoping for a sighting

Everytime I open this thread I hope that you have found him.  Hang in there....... Sad

me too. keeping everything crossed.

Jon, have you tried to speak to your local postman? give him a flyer and ask him to keep his eyes open for anyone suddenly having a dog like Jacob. A long shot but he will be the one visiting most properties in the area, and might just spot him if someone has taken him in.
Claire

Gosh I hope he is found safe and well soon!  If he is a lovely friendly boy then perhaps someone has taken him in and don't want to part with him.

I have posted this on one of the pointer forums just in case, fingers crossed for you ,

Thanks everyone for the support, We had our first siting today at about 14.45hrs he was in the grounds of Audley end House the rangers tried to get him while we were on our way there ,but must have spooked him so he dissapeared but its only 1.5miles from our house.

I have put some new scent down, so fingers crossed he may turn up tonight.

Jon
josie

At least you know he's alive and hasn't been stolen, that must be a big relief Smile  Let's hope he's home soon.
taz

This is good news Jon, at least you know he's in the vicinity, fingers crossed his excellent nose will lead him home.
Greyghost

Great news - hopefully he will find his way home tonight.  Got everything crossed here.

just wonder - do you take the other dog out to help look?

Good luck for today.  Don't be surprised if the dog spooks at seeing you and also does not respond to your whistle or voice.
anniebrac

Hi Jon

I'm so pleased that you have had a sighting of him and he's OK.  Hopefully you will be able to be reunied today.  Very best of luck.

Kind regards
Annie
Claire

Oh bless him.  Good news that you've had a sighting and he is still reasonably close to home.  I hope you have a successful day today and if I was closer to you I would gladly help in your search.

It just goes to show that even when we think our dogs know the area they live in and know where their home is, they probably don't  Sad
Bracco1

jacob

Nothing overnight, Guy your right he is definately going to take some careful coaxing, Also he needs to cross a railway and motorway to get back to us  Sad  , the next siting we get i take a couple of the other dogs out with us this we were out postering unfortunately and were a fair way from the siting. Hope to get another siting today.
Lynn

Have you tried leaving an old coat/jacket of yours on the ground in the area of the siting?  Keep positive
BenB

Just seen this - really feel for you. Is it worth taking a lamp out at night and looking for him? Drag a meat carcass in a big arc around the area he was last in to lead him away from the main road and into a safer area?

If i was closer would come and help. Fingers crossed. (By the way i lost a ferret underground for over a week recently) and got him back safe and sound - so animals can survive for a long time.
Helen

Just caught up with this as well.  Fingers well and truly crossed you get him back soon.

yes, fingers crossed Sad

Any news on Jacob ?
Bracco1

Jacob

No news i'm afaid, we were out until 4am this morning, just praying for another siting.

jon
guy

mine stayed in the area.  Unfortunately they had gone upwind so had no clue about how to get home save retracing their steps.

They say dogs hunt in circular paths, I don't know if this sort of innate technique still works or has any bearing on where to look.

What surprised me was how easily a dog will disappear into the landscape if it wants to even when you were only 100 yards away from it.

Not sure any of that helps - but I am thinking of you - good luck today.
BenB

He is out there somewhere  - keep the faith!
Claire

Just checking in for an update.  Sad to hear he's not home yet and you must all be exhausted with the searching and the worry.

Got everything crossed that he is home safe and sound very soon.

santiago

so sorry to imagine what you are going through. good luck!!!

i am convinced that he is going to be safe with you very shortly.
Bracco1

Jacob

Hi all

Sorry i,ve just pasted this in from the spin group update sorry if some is irrelevent to you guys.

Just a really quick update, we're just back in and have managed to get some night vision mono whatsit's - not cheap  and the shop didn't have the right lithium battery so we had to drive round to find one - you'd think for near on £200 they'd throw in a bloody battery lol !
Still, let's hope that it'll enable us to spot him, it'll hopefully make all the difference tonight when we're out.
Last night I was stumbling around as I go 'blind' as as a bat in the dark, so i'm now the proud owner of a posh led headtorch - least when the police arrest me for tresspassing i'll be able to see them !

Ahhh, well, another day goes by, and now it's dark again, I just can't quite apprehend this is still going on, we so want normality back, whatever happened to normal life -
Feels strange to be so out of routine. The whole house is upset without our lovely Jacob, the Spins know he's not here, they are all so on edge bless them.
I worry so much for Jacob, but all of your stories about how these dogs survive, and survive well, they really make us reliase that yes he can be okay out there, given the elements, he can make it back to us eventually. We just pray it's soon.

I think we owe a huge Thanks to Philippa, for getting us into Dogs Today, Thanks for that Pippa, and a huge Thanks to Kim and Abby for the breed notes too.

All this support is just fantastic, we don't know how we'd cope on our own, I know without your messages of encouragement and ideas we'd have long ago gone to peices.

Jon's feeling crappy today, I think it's pent up frustration, guilt, anger (that he ran off walk) and just generally feeling bloody knackered.
We're both run down, but hey, it's expected to show somewhere, so we'll get over it and carry on, we have to for Jacob's sake. We can sob and feel sorry for ourselves later, when he's home.

There's a shot tomorrow as Sarah said, but there are enough people on both who know us and will look out for Jacob, no point us being in the same place.
Really right now, without a positive sighting, we are at a loose end as to using the traps etc, it's just we need so badly the second sighting to know he's still in this area.
Just wishing for the mobile to ring and it'll be just that.

Still considering the pet communicator girls, will bear that in mind. Thanks for the referrals.

Also once we get the second sighting, the bitches in season would be a great idea, right now it's too difficult to know where to walk them, he could literally be miles away. <sigh>

Right, must go and get some food before we head off for the night
Thanks again everyone, we'll send you an update soon as we can or via Sarah

Did anyone say they had access to thermal imaging ? I haven't time to read the 522 emails to find out
Thank YOU from us both

Jacob was sighted yesterday near a village called Debden, Jon and Shelley got there asap but he had moved on.
As much as I'm very worried about Jacob I'm now equally worried for Jon and Shelley how much longer they can keep this up without making themselves ill I don't know, they are out night and day searching.

Kim
BenB

Good news about the sighting - have they got no helpers?

I know lat weekend the was a mass search alot of people for various breed clubs turned out to help. Good news that he is still being seen, lets hope he lets somebody catch him soon, I cant imagin what his owners must be going through Im a bag of nerves if I lose mine for even a short time

Still keeping my fingers crossed for you Jon.

Kim said he was spotted near Debden, is that closer to you than the first sighting ? Is he moving closer to home ? Hope so.
Claire

Oh I had really hoped you would have found him by now.  This is a bit of a long shot really but perhaps with the snow falling there might just be a chance of you seeing dog paw prints unaccompanied with human footprints?  Suggesting a dog is out on its own?  Probably a daft thought but its come into my head so sharing anyway  Embarassed   Has there been any broadcasts put out on the local radio?  Thinking if someone was driving along with the radio on they might hear him being mentioned and keep an eye out as they drive.  Bound to be lots of delivery drivers doing their rounds.

Still wishing you lots of luck.
Helen

I really thought he would have been found now as well.  So sorry that you are having to go through this nightmare.  Fingers still WELL and truly crossed for a safe return.

Helen
guy

I have convinced myself he is still OK - he must have been feeding on something - mine were seen feeding on cat food.

they also kept revisiting the same spots and seemed to hang around dwellings with other dogs.

fingers and paws crossed here.
santiago

dogs can survive many many days. if he has been seen, it means he has not been stolen and therefore it is just a question of having a little bit of luck.

luck that you clearly deserve because of the way you are fighting.

cannot wait for the post that says that he is back with you.
Lisa

Can't believe he has been missing so long!  Keep strong and I'm sure your luck will change soon. x Smile

Jacob

Thanks everyone for your comments and support, we,ve just got back in and got very hopefull about  two hours ago i picked a track of a lone dog thats had print very like jakey and moved very much the same was he does it was in a wood very near to carver barracks where he was spotted on sat, needless to say after about 30 mins tracking through woods the tarck came to an abrupt end on a track with lots of human/dog track...gutted....anyway he has had airtime on radio 1 , Heart radio and BBC essex, he also has articles in this weeks local papers..

Does anyone know if tracking dog of any kind will track other dogs????

Thanks again everyone

Jon

I think a trained bloodhound might - certainly worth asking if there are any bloodhound forums out there.

Also see if you can ask Search and Rescue groups, they may have pointers or tips.

Fingers crossed you have him home soon.
Danielle Mason

I really hope Jacob finds his way home soon. Just a thought but have you been keeping an eye out in pets for sale section of papers? As dogs that have been found sometimes appear. I am sure he is managing to feed himself. Afterall he is an hpr and in desperate measures im sure he will do what needs to be done. Good luck.
windem bang

I hope you find your dog soon. If it helps at all ,last year up my way a very shy young lab went missing and although seen fairly often it stayed away from the people it met. He was eventually returned to his owner after 5 months of living in the wild. It is thought that he ate sheep droppings plus an odd rabbit etc. He was very thin but otherwise O.K.

Dogs are much tougher than most folk think.

I wish you every bit of luck going in finding your dog .

Bracco1

Jacob

Hi Everyone,

I thought i'd update you on today's searching and events.

As some of you will know, Joanne has continued to be of the greatest support with helping us locate Jacob.
She had seen him in a dark place, maybe corrugated iron, he's sore down the left side, possibly his hip, or leg. She also saw him licking the snow, and eating from a wrapper.
She feels he is near/in an allotment and nearby a school.
She said he is missing us both and wants his blankets.
I can't tell you reading that has broken my heart. If I didn't feel so dam ill with this bronchitis i'd be out all day and all night. I am so mad with myself for getting ill.

We have scoured the allotments in surrounding areas this morning. Took every piece of old carpet and wood, and glass, iron, up just to make sure he wasn't there.
sadly nothing. No signs.
We postered heavily around those areas (surely we'll be done for littering soon !)
Jon went out again this afternoon, I guess the time apart let us both let out some tears, and for that I think we both (albeit secretly) feel relief.

This evening having seen Jon and Stew on ITV Anglia news, we have every hope that something good will come from it.
I saw Ffion on the National News too, (the Doctor who has lost Sky the black lab in Leicestershire) and thought that has only got to be a good sign.
5 minutes later a call came through saying that a lady had managed to catch a dog very similar looking to Jacob some 15 miles away, and at least 2 weeks before.
Hearts in mouth, the lady continued to say that as she has a dog at home, and he just isn't dog friendly, another lady who helped with the capture agreed she would take him to a friend.
Luckily, this lady was travelling on the same road as the other lady with the captured dog, so saw her drop off at a specific house.
It was only having seen Jacob on the news this evening did she feel she had to ring us to tell of the dog she had caught.
A long story short, it now materialises this dog is apparently from the local hunt, the lady in question actually went this evening to the house she saw the other lady drop off at, (I am sure she could hear our hearts beating very loudly, and sensed our hanging on her every word!)
Unfortunately, on arrival to the house, she was told the dog was returned to the local hunt the very same evening. <Hugest Sigh>

Determined that we needed the full closure on this possible dog being Jacob, we are now waiting on the local huntsman confirming that yes, he did take in a dog on that day, and no it wasn't Jacob. I am sure that all hunt dogs are tattooed???? so hope they can easily rule out having a domestic dog in with the pack.
I guess we may well get some hoaxes now. We know Ffion and Tim did, but we will follow them up as valid leads, as at this stage we are so damn desperate.
We already seem to have made 'friends' with a very strange man who says he is distraught that Jacob is missing, and that he loves all animals, and rehomes them, and is very psychic. We sit, we listen, he seems harmless.....how do you tell him to go away when he feels he is helping I do not know. We don't need any enemies right now that's for sure.

So, that's where we are at right now, nothing else to go on really, we just need to wait on calls that will hopefully come from the news article.
Oh and i'm compiling a blog so that it will be easier for me to update everyone,
It has really helped Ffion and Tim, there efforts have been amazing, they share some real highs and lows in their search for Sky their black lab now missing for almost 10 weeks.

BenB

hi

The huntsman will know his hounds and yes they will all be tattooed. There is no chance he would mistake a bracco for one of his pack.

Fingers still crossed.

Hi Guys,

Thanks again for the support,Just been out postering a new area as we've had a reasonably confident sighting on the edge of Bishop stortford, Herts.
Although it was last wednesday at about 7.30pm...hopefully we might get a couple more calls from the posters, jogging memories...we'll see.

Jon
BenB

Are there are point to points near you that might be worth attending? You do get people from all over the area at them.
BritAnnie

That's almost 2 months he's been gone.  Someone must have taken him in and not reported it.  He can't surely have survived this long without human assistance?  I do hope this sighting is positive and you can now get him back.  I can't understand people taking animals in and not saying - they are all owned by someone -, even my ducks!  I'd be furious if they wandered off and someone kept them.  Someone was feeding my cat and I gave them a good telling off as he's MY cat not theirs, and they had 6 of their own!

Cross posted from Gundog Training Forum:

Jon and Shelley Haggerwood are following up a reported sighting of a Bracco in Eastbourne on Sunday at about 12 to 12.30. Obviously this may well have been someone innocently walking their own dog but the Haggerwoods need to eliminate it for their peace of mind. I know that some of you here have Braccos so if you were on Eastbourne seafront on Sunday with your dog or know of a Bracco owner who was, could you please let them know, or let me know and i will pass it on to them. Many thanks.
