Luxating Patellas

I have a query concerning a three year old Brittany dog that is worked hard every day. It appears that he has a luxating [slipping] patella, his vet has examined him and diagnosed this and recommended resting him for a month after which he will x-ray the knee. The question was if an operation is required what is the success rate, how much time will he be out of action and are there different ways of repairing the problem? ie; I know that the grove has to be deepened but can the tendon be kept in place with a 'bridge' over the grove but beneath the skin?
I have this vaque feeling that I have heard or seen a dog that had a luxation done this way but cannot remember where or when.
As he is a brilliant working dog the owner is concerned that he may not be able to work him any more and the dog would pine if kept away from his job. There is no question of rehoming him or anything else, he would be kept as a house pet if all else fails.

I know its not the same but I had a Brittany pup with a Cruciate ligament injury thanks to too much energy and a tall concrete step. She had similar surgery done to her knee and from about 4 months past the op has never looked or worked better. I had forgotten it had happened to her until I read this post.
