MY BRIT IS LOSING FUR ON HER NECK,CHEST AND BELLY BEEN TO VET SAID IT COULD BE VAIROUS ALLERGIES AND JUST GAVE INJECTION ANTI BIO'S AND STERIODS BUT NO CHANGE HAS ANYONE ANY ADVICE TO HELP DONT WANT HAVE TO PUMP HER FULL OF TABLETS IF I CAN HELP IT.

There are innumerable causes for hair loss - stress, anxiety, food intolerances, mites, fleas, seasons, and yes, allergies too. But unless she has had blood tests your vet cannot possible be certain of this. You may need to change her food. What is she fed on at the moment? She may just have a reaction to it - an intolerance rather than an allergy.

I would want a skin scaping I think to assertain exactly what is going on. It doesn't look particularly red. Is she scratching all the time?

I would consider consulting a homeopathic vet .............. I am not convinced on one level but while saying that I have used homeopathic cures on my boys that have worked. Coincidence maybe but worth a try.

Also you could look here http://www.animal-allergy.com/ as I know people who have used the service and been happy with the findings being able to help them avoid allergens.

I had a dog a few years back that had to have gluten free food etc as it had a reaction to cereal content, the poor thing used to go quite bald until i switched food, you can find numerous on the market and it may be worth changing whilst you wait for tests to be done.

Re the food, try something else for a little while, I am assuming it is chicken and rice you are feeding, well, maybe it's chicken she's allergic or sensitive to. Or even rice, no-one ever really knows until they hit the nail on the head Smile

Re the homeopathic vet, it's always worth a try, and also, I'd ask the vet, if there is no itching, no nasty hot skin etc, why the steroids? Steroids can reduce immune systems in dogs and in my very humble opinion are far too often sought as the first option without any reason why.

This could be something or nothing, and could be hormonal etc. Have you spoken to her breeder and asked her if she has any ideas that might help? Or at the very least let your breeder know that your Brit has this mystery ongoing. Definately try the brit forum as it might be something someone else has come across.

I'd still ask for a skinscrape btw.

Have you used any flea treatments etc in that area? Just some things to think about Smile

Pagan has had the York test done & it came back with loads of things she was allergic to. I had to swap her food as she is allergic to chicken & rice amongst a lot of other things so I now feed challenge dog food which is salmon & potato & she does really well on it.

My 2ps worth.
First thoughts are sarcoptic mange.
Second thought is get some Camrosa ointment - used it very successfully on one of our springers and it cleared up something that looked a lot like this.

Ben ,is Camrosa Ointment available over the counter in a shop or is it a visit to the vets to get it ? I don't have any skin problems with my dogs but you never know what the future holds in store !

It could be a simple thing like not enough oil in the diet. Have you changed to a lower fat food in the last few months?

You could try some Evening Primrose Oil for a few months it isn't going to do any harm. Start off with 1,000 mg.

York testing is good but in my experience a food allergy/intolerance usually comes about when the dog is fed the same old diet all the time (same would happen to us humans). Intolerances can change quite regularly depending on the amount fed of the particular food causing the intolerance. Sometimes us humans can tolerate some foods on a 3/4 day cycle.

Looking at where it is..... I had somebody ring me the other day with a query about the dog dags. Turned out the dog was allergic to the metal in the rings. The bits that look affected also look like the tags could be reach those parts..... just a thought.

no does not were harness or collar only use slip lead when out as for food i feed james wellbeloved iv ordered some Camrosa ointment so will try that dont think it could be mange think vet would of pick that one up.
as for spayed farm land not sure there is a bit of land i walk through when exercising her that i think is farmed how could i find out if its sprayed or not?
