Novice needs help with young rex the vizsla

Urgent help needed! Rex is 3 and a bit. Last 2/3 days gone off food by way of guarding it rather than eating it, though nibbles a bit with encouragement.
This afternoon ran 2 miles to friends (along a single track country lane)who have two bitches  and a young dog (all labradoodles). There he was paying particular interest in one of the bitches and wrestling/play most of the time with the dog. The owners don't think she's in season but not sure if it is time.
Guarding food/not eating and running away.....linked or not?
Normal behaviour?
Hope there is help! He is my first dog from puppy.

I would guess that your friend's bitch is definitely coming into season. Wink Those are typical symptoms of a lovesick dog!  they can smell bitches on heat from miles off.  he may be inexperienced so will be anticipating - bitchesgive off the scent fro variable times prior to actually starting to show colour.  How experienced are your friends?  Do they know what to look for?  Best make sure they are kept well apart or you'll have mongrel puppies around!

charlie my pups just finishing her first season, my 5 year old lad digby [ her dad] messes around with his food when its normaly top of his wish list, obedience around the house has gone out the window, have to be vigilent but all the fun of owning a young bitch   Wink . i would say the bitch is coming into season and his hormones have taken over his male brain.   all the best  roy

I agree with Annie, sounds like he's just got canoodling with labradoodling on his mind....but not quite ready to give up on his food so keeping his options open Cool  Laughing  Laughing

Thankyou all, I am so pleased it's just vigilance required! Last couple of days wondering whats wrong but not worried as he did not seem out of sorts. I guess this is the time however NOT to try and fine tune his stop whistle. But I will have more questions soon!! Really appreciate your help.
Cheers,
