nest location

Last year around may time i was asked by a farmer if i would run my gsps over his mowing fields to locate any partridge nests before they we're mowed for hay .
I said yes as the ground was in a gray partridge sensitive area and also would be an opportunity to do something different .
the first field drew a blank so we moved on into a second field and i had 2 points both with partridge nests we slipped the dogs on a lead then collected the eggs to put under broody bantams which was very successful and the farmer released 15 young grays back into the wild.
Has any one else done such a thing i would be interested to here from anyone that has

Not heard of this before but must mention it to my farmer friends next door to see if they want any assistance in that respect Laughing

Sounds like a good method. Is he part of the GCT grey partridge count scheme?

They used to find the partridge nests just by looking. They would then take the eggs away but leave a dummy clutch and just before they hatched, put them back under the partridge.

Rob, husband, used to use his old pointer to find grouse nests, as well as chicks to look at clutch size, hatching success etc.

Yes he is on the scheme started 10 years ago with 2 pairs now has 15 pairs on a small acreage sparrowhawks unfortuantly do a lot of damage to the grays .
But being more positive finding nests and releasing under bantams is as close to wild as we can get it and is a more guaranteed way of keeping stocks up
mark.
