Partridge Bumping

Recently I have been running my dog on an open field of stubble to master his quartering technique.

To my amazement, out of know where fifty or so wild partidge flew up, I have walked my dog in this area for many years and this is the first time I have discovered them, on one hand I am delighted as I have now not only got my self a quartering training facility but ground in which I can encourage my dog to point.

The thing is he has never pointed them, they have just got up before I have had time to get anywhere in what would be shooting range, the wind has appeared favourably light South Westerly into my face.

was just wondering what anyones thoughts were on this, as I dont want to waste a good oppurtunity?  Confused

Have you used a long line to keep in contact with you & you with him, work into the wind he should quarter, if he has never scented game or pointed game he may just bump it   if he has been scolded on certain game for any reason he may just blink it (pretend its not their & just bump) viz dont like to be scolded the wrong look & mine gets the sulks.
i would practise pointing on the partridge with long line  & practise quartering somewhere with less game or game scent so he has to work a bit ( dont let him get board or all he will do is go through the motions) looks good until you really want him to work on game & bump bump bump boring or you just lose control of him as he knows best & two fingers im off.
once you have things sorted they are a joy to watch working i know people have said it before but it is a partnership & it feels like you are both connected Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy (my mrs is so jealous ) Confused

Paradoxically a huge strong scent cone from a large group can be more difficult for a dog to handle than from just a few or even a single bird. Especially a novice dog.
If you are any good with a long line by all means try it. As somebody who feels himself to be generally quite dextrous I am absolutely cack handed with a line. I much prefer to use pigeons in an launcher to give the dog the general idea and polish up the drop before I take the dog back to game.

Des, do you have a link to your article on "the drop" as my bookmarked one doesn't appear to work?

Is the drop where you drop the dog (It lays down) & gets a net thrown over it & the game ?
