Hello there,

my handle is Lazerbeam and I found this site off the NOBS site thanks to Big Mike.
Currently working a 2 1/2 year old male GWP.from the Kelford kennels.
First HPR and thoroughly enjoying the challenge. Worked for the last two seasons beating on pheasant and partridge and was fortunate enough to get a couple of days on the grouse in the Peak district.
Will pick up on occassions but not too often as I don't want to loose the point.
Just started on the trials scene with the lad and he's showing potential.
Get to most of the game fairs as I'm retired and the lad is coming on in the scurries.
Will do some of the demos at the BASC game fairs, so if you see a male GWP in the ring with a nutter wearing glasses and looking lost.... come and introduce your self

How do you find beating with your gwp? Does he have time to go on point, or do those pesky spaniels steal the bird?

Hi helen,

Initially was greeted with a lot of scepticism, but but I deliberately set out to train initially for the beating of pheasant and partridge so I could get the close control.
Trained for the point at the same time and made sure that I had the capability of either sending him in to flush or recall.
I now encourage him to hold point and allow the Cockers/springers to flush.
The other lads love it as it gives them the opportunity to "train" their dogs as his points are usually spot on.
Definately the grouse work is the highlight of the year as to see him range on the moors brings tears to the eyes.

Thanks for explaining. I remember reading a Guy Wallace book saying that beating is the worst thing for hpr's because you can lose that point. It's nice to know that isn't always the case.

I love watching the dogs on the moor - we also have pointers and a setter. We had our young gwp out on the moor today just for a quick run out and to see what she made of it, along with our young setter. Unfortunately, no grouse as we were on a very low density area and the weather was appalling but she worked the wind well and I was pleased with her. It was only for a look see as July will be the best time for them both.

Hi Helen,
Gave it a lot of thought on how to train the HPR,
Have worked with dogs for many years as a Home office dog handler and later as an instructor and worked with all the usual Labs,Springers and Cockers etc but wanted a challenge really.
The bottom line is that he should do what I ask him to do. If he doesn't it was my fault because I didn't explain it correctly.(never met a dishonest dog.)
Chuffed to bits with my lad, and every day I try to progress him a bit furthur by giving him some different work to do. He seems to thrive on the challenge. After all these years I am still trying to find the limits to a canines ability and never cease to be amazed at their abilities.
