Progress!

I owe Des a million thankyous, his advice to work on the "drop" couldn't have been better timed. Liesel, my 15 month old GWP bitch, has been very receptive to training over the last ten days or so and is stopping to the whistle much more promptly now that I get her to sit each time. Interestingly here in New Zealand they believe that pointers should stand not sit, I guess in case they sit when they should point, but I am more interested in practical control at the moment than any future trials.

Yesterday whilst out walking I blew the stop whistle so that I could redirect her from about 70yards; she had just stopped when a hare got up in front of me and ran past about 15 yards from her. I shouted sit which she did and she just watched it run 400yards straight away from her in full view. The first hare she has seen and I have set the precedent! I talked to her until she calmed down a bit then took her away so she didn't track it and worked her through our silage where she cast quite well and really steadily, even stopping to point (lark haunts) a couple of times. She's normally a bit of a tearaway so I was thrilled with her.

Now she is in heat so we will be doing more consolidation for a while before we can go out in company. I know it won't be time wasted.
