Steadier and longer pointsHello!
I just spent a couple of days in the KC grouse training weekend. I highly recommend it to anyone. The idea was to train my 4.5 year old Brittany on red grouse (his second time in the moor).
I am reasonably pleased with the results. The dog runs hard and quarters well and has a good nose (instructors view). He is nervous and a bit too "hot" on birds. In France they call Brittanies like this "viandardes" from viande = meat, i.e. dogs that are too focused on going after the bird. They say they end up being the best (?), as they never lie when they point. I add that they are tough to train (at least for me!).
The result is that he can creep a little bit while on point and/or break point if I am not close by particularly. He is now much more steady to flush though even if I am far away (big improvement). I am not sure he is deliberately putting up the bird, maybe sometimes he is.
I have access to a public park daily, but unfortunately no good ground holding birds. No real regular access to bird launchers either I am afraid. I know this is an issue, but that is the fact. So operating under those restrictions, what exercises would you recommend me to work on?
I am working on a strict stop to whistle, which is going well... but maybe there are other angles here.
For those of you that have followed my dog's retrieving issues, it is way better! I took the opportunity to do a few retrieves of a plain dummy in the middle of the moor surrounded by grouse. Those who know Brittanies know what challenge that is. And it went well! Huge thanks to everybody in the Forum who helped, particularly Josie and Guy.
Many thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Just a short reply to myself. Do you know of someone up to 4 hours from London with a bird launcher?
Maybe Rory Major?

I've got one Santi - only a manual not remote but only four pigeons. You'd be welcome for a weekend if you can bring the birds.
There are several pointing tests on grouse moors around end March time if you want to get him more access to Grouse.

I wish I'd have known it was you with the Brit I would have introduced myself. I was at the weekend too

That is too bad Claire! I guess we will both have to go back again and spend another weekend like that... it is the only sensible thing to correct this!
