Stolen, or possibly lost, LM - Brampton area (near Carlisle)I've just picked this up, posted by Münsterländer Rescue on Munstermag. If anyone sees a dog answering this description, please could they give that number a ring. Many thanks. Sue
LOST DOG
I just had a distraught lady on the telephone who has lost her dog today. It was seen being picked up by a 60 something couple in a camper van on the A69 at BRAMPTON (nearest big city Carlisle) - Cumbria. The dog had no collar on at the time and is not microchipped. His name is xxxx and he is two and is a light marked dog with a white blaze. It has been reported to the police. ANY information would be gratefuuly received. Please give me a call if you have any info : 01760 336102

I just edited out his name on the original post as I found this on Scottish Münsters
A lARGE Munsterlander has been stolen near Carlisle by a Couple in Camper Van.
The couple who enticed Munster ( will not put name of dog on in case the thiefs read this ) with a bit of food to go into their camper van told a Lady standing by that they would take the munster to the police station ..but their owners have phoned all police stations in the area and vets and he is no where to be found. There is an reward for his safe return
www.scottishmunsters.co.uk has a picture up of this dog and asks for anyone with any info to contact them....
Edit: Apparently, the couple were two women in their 60s with 'posh' accents....

Sounds similar to the incident a few years ago when a woman "rescued" a thin stray she found whilst on holiday and took it home. She decided that it needed castrating which the vet did. It was only by chance that an acquaintance informed her that it was a foxhound and as they were tattood they would be able to find out where it came from.
Needless to say the master of the hunt was somewhat less than amused at having a stud dog neutered and it does not say much for the vet really does it?
So it may not actually be "theft" the people may have genuinely thought that the dog was a stray "which I suppose technically it was" especially if it was wearing no collar.
I still find it incredible that will all the publicity about dog thefts etc that owners still fail to tattoo or microchip their pets?
I do hope that the owner is reunited with her dog, I just would not be able to function if my dogs disappeared.
Fingers crossed.

Hi Allyson, no that doesn't say much for the vet at all.
As you say, it is possible that the women in the camper van thought that this dog was a stray or lost. He does happen to be a rather striking dog who shows, but I suppose he could have been muddy!! I gather that there is also some worry as there have been reports of a woman trying to buy Münsters for reasons that didn't appear to be sound. There was a report in the Club Mag a while back, but I'm not sure if this fear is connected to that (so to speak).
As you rightly say, it is incredible that dogs are out without being microchipped or tattoed. I hope that this persuades anyone who has not had their dog either chipped or tattoed to rush off to have it done.... However, in this situation, it would have been best to have hung around a little while to see if anyone turned up before enticing a dog into one's car and driving off, I would have thought ...
All fingers & toes crossed for the dog's safe return...

This dog is still missing. I gather that the police are now treating this incident as theft. There is a poster on doglost.co.uk and people have been sticking these up at various motorway service stations and so on. I believe campsites were informed as well as police stations, animal shelters etc. Various dog organizations are also on the look out. I believe that the campervan was white and had an 04 plate and that the woman seen coaxing the dog into the van was in her 60s. I do so hope that he turns up, OK, soon...

More Information Emerges....This dog is yet to be found. These are the latest posts from doglost.co.uk.
15:08 - 13/9/2006
Latest details - the camper van is a Haymer model O4 registration. Marvin has been on CFM news with a short interview with his owner. ...
07:40 - 13/9/2006
Poster, poster, poster! If the people in the campervan were local he must surely be seen by someone - you can't keep a dog the size of a LM hidden for long!
16:16 - 12/9/2006
Just spoken to owner again. Marvin was taken by a man and a woman in a camper van from the layby on the brampton bypass close to the turning to Alston. They travelled towards Carlisle with the dog. Thought to be local. Munsterlander rescue, RSPCA and Animal Refuge at Wetheral have been informed. CFM Radio kindly mentioned him on air and Border TV will hopefully be mentioning him on the news. Understandably the owners are having a really hard time at the moment and we need to find this dog. Stay safe Marvin until we find you safe and sound ...

Marvin - still missingNo, Marvin is still missing.
I've been away and have been trying to find out what has been happening. It appears that there has been a possible sighting in Edmund's Castle (?) - the dog was described as a black/white Gordon Setter. Nothing more has been posted on any of the sites about this. However, it has now emerged that a week or two before Marvin disappeared, some bod tied up their dog (I think a collie) outside Tesco and asked a friend to watch the dog. A man came along and tried to untie the dog but ran off when the friend shouted at him. He was driving an 04 campervan, just like the people who took Marvin ....
If I hear any news, I will post. The poor dog must be so confused....I guess if the people who coaxed him into their van still have
him, then someone will see him as, unless they are used to HPRs, I cannot imagine that they will have an easy time of looking after what now appears to be a stolen (whatever the original intention was) Münster.

This is the link to the poster on doglost. I've taken a copy to my vets and will ask the trainers to put up one when I go on Wednesday. If anyone can put up a poster anywhere in the UK, it might help. Many thanks...
Here's hoping Marvin gets home soon.

Please be aware that with some of the more unusual breeds, police, rescue etc have no idea what they are looking for or have found.
My 12 year old Vizsla complete with microchip-police did not have a reader, identified her as 5 year old lab x, even when we presented a picture at the police station they denied having her. It took a comment from Pet search that made us return to the police station and ask to see this X.
Yes it was our dog.
Do follow up every lead, however tenuous it may be

Hi Penny
Thanks. Amazing about the vizsla photo.
I believe Doglost told them to look for Springer X & Collie X as well. A black/white Gordon sounds like a Münster to me. I'll see if I can find anything more out tomorrow from Marvin's breeder. I don't know the people who lost Marvin. I'm certainly used to people thinking LMs are English Setters, overgrown Spaniels, longhaired Dalmatians, some odd sort of Collie, Whipppet crosses and so on.
I will pass on your comments. Many thanks

You can never rely on people knowing what breed of dog a dog IS. I have known Gordon Setters being described as Rottweilers, my LH Weimaraner has been considered a lurcher, Weim x Red Setter, dilute Flatcoat....... I could go on.
Even the more "common" dogs such as Labradors can be called all sorts of things, so a photo is always best and a description rather than a title will help most.

The owners must be frantic.
Im going to get arrested the way Im carrying on, everyone couple I see over the age of about 50, that have one of these Camper Vans I asking if they have seen or heard anything Or parked Campers I am peering through the window.
Im a member of the Caravan Campoing Club, is it worth me send a picture for them to post in the next magazine or even for me to send one out to all the sites, Its a long shot, but if you have spent that sort of money on a Camper the chances are they are a retired couple and travel about.
Let me know if you want me to contact the Caravan and Camping Club. It might be worth someone contacting the Caravan Club too. It might just work or a least give you a sighting.

I take it we are free to crosspost to any forums we are all members of? Saves us all asking for individual permissions.
Also is it worth advertising in the Loot - because lets face it with a camper van and the possibility of someone fitting the same description trying to get a similar 'looking' dog by theft, they could be stealing to order (yes I know it's unlikely but these things do happen, and I am trying not to think the worst, but if us dog people don't stick up for our own who will?)....
Thanks - here's hoping someone can find the dog........

ThanksOh Rhimad, thank you so much. Yes, please could you send a pic to the Mag and the sites, if you have the time & don't mind. That would be really good & very helpful. Do you think the Mag/Club would put up a pic at their stand/s at the NEC? It would be very helpful if they did. Many thanks for all your help.
I'll see if I can find out about the Caravaning Club. I don't know Marvin's real owners but I have met his breeder a few times. She's been mailing a lot of people & I've been in regular touch with her over this. I'm not sure how computer literate Marvin's owners are. LM Rescue has been very much involved.
Thanks very much again Rhimad.
Nina/Alkemist, many thanks for the Loot suggestion. Stealing to order is always a possibility. It is odd that a collie (given Marvin's markings) was nearly taken a couple of weeks earlier by a chap with a van etc etc I'll pass your suggestion back to the breeder for her to pass on to the owner - I think this is one they would need to handle themselves....
Thank you both very much again. It's over a month now, I think the owner is getting very depressed. Goodness knows how poor Marvin must be feeling - he must be so confused, poor dog.
Best wishes & thanks again

CrosspostingSorry, Nina/Alkemist, forgot to say, yes PLEASE crosspost to any Forums of which you are a member. It is more than fine, it would be brilliant. I got the photos of Scottish Munsters and MunsterMag and they'd made them available for copying (ie not locked) but you should be able to get them off here...
Many many thanks

Hi
Thanks very much again.
Yes, I hope that he is being well looked after too. The poor owners must feel really sick. It's quite awful losing an animal and not knowing what has happened.
Thanks again
