The Woozle has landed...Please say hi, says Admin.
So...........Hi.
Fogdog 'n The Woozle, so named because as a rescue Weim three years' ago he was quite literally afraid of his own shadow.
[for full story : see http://winnie-the-pooh.ru/stories/english/woozle/ ]
I no longer shoot - too old to trust my eyes and dislike inaccuracy 'n guns.
My mother-in-law (Aged 90) still uses her ladies' 20-bore over-and-under with total accuracy - two bunnies per morning - from the safety of her bedroom window because "they ruin the croquet lawn, dear!" but does not require the services of a picker-up since the bodies are simply thrown over the fence for the local foxes.
Someone taught The Woozle the rudiments of gundog work - he knows the commands used in the field rather than the words usually used for pets; and he is completely missing the fighting gene, which we assume means that someone taught him to get on with his work and leave other dogs be.
The fact that they used extreme violence [as was evident when we got him] to do this means they broke his desire to work for them. He is a feather dog - fur is ignored totally. Indeed he is actually frightened of rabbits and screamed loudly when one jumped out of cover and hit him on the shoulder!
Our joy is watching his skills come alive as his boldness has increased. He loves to quarter the ground and flush game on the Kent marshes - and he loves his new doggy friends here. He has gained a reputation locally as A Good Thing to walk with - his largest friend is a Bloodhound bitch and the smallest an entire Chihuahua male who also has the good manners to play nicely.

What a wonderful story(dog not Pooh and co, although it is too). HE is a very lucky lad to have found you, and you are to be much admired for taking this dog on. Although you don't shoot anymore, perhaps your M I L could shoot a couple of pigeons or the liek and invite him over to retrieve them for her? I'm sure hee'd love some picking up. Welcome to the forum, BTW

Hi Fogdog,
You wouldn't be one of them there, writer educator sort of chaps with a thing about public schools and Hackney, by any remote possibility, per chance
If so, nice blog....
If no, not to worry, nurse will be trying to find me soon with her special tablets

Do you like cheese sandwiches Fogdog Because if you do you will fit even better on here

Greyghost, and Lisa - thanks for the welcome!
Bill T - the only thing we have in common so far is an admiration for a certain Reeman Aruac and his kneeknockingly gorgeous owner with whom I spent a happy half hour talking at Crufts about thirty years ago!
finncally - slightly worried for your continuing mental health... but not one to cast nasturtiums too early in a relationship so will only state that when I last looked in the mirror I couldn't help noticing these protuberances on my chest so don't think I'm a chap! But would love a pointer towards this blog you think you've seen..............meanwhile keep taking the tablets!
Thanks, Ghilliegumdrop, cheese sandwiches always welcome!

Please accept my humblest apologies, I was labouring under the misapprehension that you was somebody else.
Which you arn't. (you are however at liberty to be somebody else if you so wished)
So if you arn't who I thought you were, and are infact somebody else. I can see how easey it would be to for me to think you were somebody else. And as you are indeed somebody else, which was my original thought. then erm er........ errr you are ... hold on where was I ?

I am neither Maid of Kent nor Kentish Maid, Helen!
Born and bred in deepest Devon, and never knew Kent until twenty years' ago..... almost. Next Wednesday will be the twentieth anniversary of the first time we saw this house, a move forced on me by the need to be near the parents-in-law and care for them..... farcical really, as m-i-l is clearly still managing fine on her own!

No wonder you've gone off to the Scottish Group
Argaty, whats happenin at Argety, who's going to do what to whom ??
Talk sense quine, I have an understanding deficit disorder..
The loverly wee dog is doing fine..... (a few of the Highland Group lurk on here....shhhhh)

Nothing! But some of the Scottish Group are, I believe, travelling Northwards to Nutty land for a GWT? Am I wrong?
BA
|
Fogdog
|
FinnCally - for a Geordie Sassenach you've got some cheek referring to the auld country as Nutty land..... oh no, 'twas not you it was that BA!
One day I may tell you why Finn, Cally and various other references almost made my blood run cold..............but first I need to look up Argety to see how far north you go.
Meanwhile would some kind person explain to a newbie the significance of cheese sandwiches hereon. Are they like "coffee" on another site perhaps?

King prawns in yellow bean sauce and special fried rice Beats cheese butties any day

You need to pay homage to the fromage for the secret to be told!

Nowt to do with 'coffee' thank goodness. I could eat cheese sandwhiches every day and can go without 'coffee' for yonks

OOer Thats got me attention, splitting FinnCally up like that
Argety is someplace BA goes to to ignore training advice..... I'm further up North, in fact, now that I'm nervous, far, far, FARRRR up North....
Oh, and for the record, Cheese and Cumberland snorker sangwiches...
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
Brie and cranberry............
|
Fogdog
|
Well, if we're going to play Name That Cheese.........for fogdogs it's got to be "misithra" - μισηδρα - a sort of creamy cheese made from whey that's put on top of a Cretan village salad! Roll on Thursday - Crete here we come!
|
Helen
|
mmmm, brie! I can have it now - woohoo!
Helen
|
Fogdog
|
Brie and homemade quince jelly..... mmmmmmmmmmmm
|
Finncally

I eat my peas with honey
Iv'e done it all my life
It makes the pea's taste funny
But it keeps them on my knife...
Why not try cheesey pea pie (garden peas and mistra) hmmmmmm.
BTW Brie and cranberry .... very port out starboard home, and nice....

'Tis a myth Finncally, a nice myth, but not true nonetheless.........
Google it - Snopes it - and you will find...

and when you get to the very bottom of the article..... P.o.s.h. it ain't!
p.s. what is mistra?

Crickey.. thats me telt then, who'd have thought it was reverse acronym (bacronym) that was made up from the word posh.....
Thank the infinite resource of the internet and its abysmal lack of accurate information for pointing out, what of millions of pounds spent on educating my mothers children, failed to do.....

Paz
|
Hi Fogdog tis truly wonderful to find you and Woozle here, lol
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
Actually I prefer Pont l'eveque but I couldn't spell it And then there's the cheese what we have been pigging out on all week in Portugal......wait for it.......queijo de ovelha curado amentegado Little round cheeses that you cut the top off and scoop out the middle then plaster it all over a piece of bread [rustic with bits] and then sit and savor preferable with a few olives and several bottles of the local plonk
PS What are these beans that Windem Bang/Plum has been spilling Is it true that advise is being ignored Has he swopped them for his cow and is he going to climb up the beanstalk

I am partial to 'Mont d'Or' or Vacherin. So runny it is supplied in a birch restrainer. Cut the top off and put it in the oven to warm through, splosh a bit of white wine in it an then serve as a fondue.
Smells disgusting but tastes divine.
|
Fogdog
|
Aha! Now I begin to understand the references to cheese which I had previously assumed were aired by a clique de fromage within the forum for the exclusion of newbies..............
Birch.... as in dominatrix and punishment?
Restrainer.... as in cuffs and chains?
As for the single Plum.... formerly fully endowed but must've upset the forum controller in a previous life? Or did you run out of Luncheon Vouchers?
Paz, I think you are Too Young for this forum! You should stay close to Sacha and possibly ask Zena to round up the culprits before you attempt to join in!

Hi Paz is looking for mentors. She may be young now but can't have her growing up as a wayward hussy
Where else would she find humorous, smart mentors? I was told this was the place
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
I'm quite parial to a bit of Vacherin as well....we don't normally get it till the spring cause that's when the cows produce the colostrum

A piece of 'blue' cheese is never now going to be the same
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
Enough 'blue' on here without the cheese
|
Paz
|
living in hope of the former Good cheese is always easily obtained
But high-quality, sophisticated, decadent blue is often sought in vain
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
Just you hang on till Bill gets on here with BIG U
|
Paz
|
Should I be anticipating that with joy or dread?
|
guy
|
more a case of where will his imagination go when his U meets 'restraining birch' I doubt it will be 'homage to the fromage'
No offers of a mentor for Paz then. (can you remind us where you are in the world ?)
|
Paz
|
Hi Guy I have no doubt that Paz' sought after mentor will appear at some stage. In the meantime I am having a wonderful time reading through the posts. Have got some great advice and tips already.
I live in the land of flat hats, whippets, liggies, Angel of the North and Brown Ale
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
What sort of mentoring does Paz want then Because if you stay with us [which we hope you do] you are definately going to end up as daft as the rest of us
|
Paz
|
Hi Jan Firstly, I do intend to stay. I am a self confessed pleasure seeking, hedonistic eccentric with a wacky sense of humour .... so feel VERY much at home in here (please take that as a compliment ). My symptoms must be contagious coz my dawgs are the same
Re the mentor(s) for Paz .... I have always used one of my older dogs to train my pups. Sadly Sach is no longer up to that job (she is very old, almost totally blind and deaf, and tbh, frankly cannot be *rsed with a boisterous pup). Sach I feel has the right to peaceful old age
For Paz to be as good an escort-dog as Sach I need to give her the same sort of quality R & R i.e. agility and WT activities. In addition she needs to be around well mannered, obedient dogs to ensure she too carries on the family tradition of 'ambassadors for the breed'.
Left to her own devices my smart, assertive pup is well capable of becoming an ASBO
|
Paz
|
As I believe in mentors so much ..... should we perhaps have a thread for that?
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
That sounds like a very good idea.....pity I live so far away, we could have met up and been eccentric together [I'm carrying on a good family tradition here as my grandmother was as daft as a brush ] One thing for sure is you will get loads of mentoring on here....in fact you may go into overload
I'm glad that at least you lot are as daft as me...restores my faith in human nature This is a brilliant forum
PS So THAT'S what Ghillie is doing with Merlin....gawd, no wonder he's mad, he's caught it from her
|
Paz
|
Hi again Herts is on our Grand Tour of the British Isles itinerary so chances are we will meet
I come from a LONG line of eccentrics. Most of them are/were wonderful people (the kind ones, that is). Part of the joy of eccentricity is that you live a long time. (My grandparents had a hundred years of it, Mum still alive at 90 +)
The folks that give me a bad time ( and it is mutual) are the bliddy control freaks. Luckily they just canna cope with me, so the giving-of-the-wide-berth is mutual If I hear the words 'you should', 'you ought' etc I metaphorically close my ears and go into high-speed reverse. And avoid for ever more.
I am always open to persuasion, seduction even. But apart from the police and my dentist, I obey no one
Hoping to persuade another one of 'us' to join the forum too

Ghilliegumdrop

You sure you didn't have a sister that was parted from you at birth You, and anyone else on here, are very welcome to call in and have a cuppa and/or food. Or even stay the night....preferably when the MiL is here so we can drive her mad with talking dogs
Come to think of it......it would probaly drive Mike mad as well, oh well, he could go and stay with his mother
John, I'll have you know MY Brittanys are well behaved, good little dogs what do every thing what they are told..........eventually
|
Paz
|
Did I suggest that, John?
I always have an open mind. Never met a Brittany ...... tis on my 'to do' list. But if the dawgs are anything like the owners on here, that's good enough for me

Hi Jan beginning to feel I have met a true kindred spirit in you
Careful with your wonderful, impetuous offer of hospitality. We agoraphobics are well known for having a panic attack anywhere, and feel an over whelming need to have a break from life's busy highway. Particularly if the coffee, vino and company are good
ALWAYS happy to give bolshy MILs the time of their life
Offer of hospitality is reciprocated (thankfully no MIL)

Hello CC!!!
|
Paz

as to where I live ..... my local is the Beamish Mary pub - Any help?
|
Fogdog
|
Hi to you too Jinty!
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
Just so long as everyone doesn't arrive at once......although our local wouldn't mind that
No problem with panic attacks and there is plenty of booze to see you through one....might even be some sloe gin/vodka left at the back of the cupboard [where the MiL cannot find it]
|
Paz
|
Hi Jan always have hip flask attached to waistcoat
I travel supping Cava (therefore arrive a tad squiffy) and luckily never met an off-licence yet that wouldna let in a pretty escort-dawg
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
Sounds Good....our local pub lets dogs [and owners] in so no problem
|
Paz
|
Mine too - have trained 5 escort-dogs in there. good food, good cellar and good the other, so I have been told
Re the hooch, and carting in supplies. Forgot to mention that the youngest brat also has panniers. As long as she has got her teddy with her she will happily transport anything that fits in her back-pack

Not too far from the Borders to Durham, Helen. I use my Brats as a way of dissuading people from getting one!
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
That's really cruel Liz....just think if you didn't do that you could have populated the whole of the Broders with Brittany's
|
Paz
|
Hi Liz good to hear from you. Tis so true. You are just up the road. I am assuming that trains and the such go your way.
If you are ever passing, and need a pit-stop, please call in and persuade me not to not to get a Brittany Have a feeling that being an escort-dog would not float their canoe . In their favour they do look nice and cuddly
Hi Jan are the borders short of Brits then?
|
Paz
|
Hi again Liz Thought I had better ask......What sort of hospitality appeals to you? Are you a partaker of tea, coffee and whisky perchance?
|
Liz
|
Sorry Helen we're 35 miles from the nearest railway station (Berwick), Edinburgh is 40 miles, Carlisle 60 (even more now the A7 is blocked!) and Newcastle 70.
Thank you Dr Beeching
|
Paz
|
Hi Liz So, ...... when Paz and I resume her Grand Tour of the British Isles we get off the train at Berwick I take it, turn west and just keep walking . Thank gawd for back packs and panniers, at least we wont arrive hungry.
Is there a weekly stage-coach, passing bus perchance?
Sadly I'm too old and ugly for thumbing it to work
Or perhaps I should just wait for you to pass by our casa
|
Liz
|
Well as we're on the Tweed you could always paddle upstream by canoe
|
Paz
|
And bring a few salmon with us when we arrive?
Heavens, Liz Tis many a year since I paddled one of those. Now, how do I train Paz to do that? hmmm .... you may well have given us a new training challenge
Can just see it in your local rag 'Escort-dog paddles own canoe upstream to get to good hospitality!'
Hang on though, they have been doing that for years
|
Liz
|
Well Ozzy goes for a swim in the river nearly every morning, but I don't know how easy it would be to train him to take a rope in his teeth and pull a boat behind him

just another Brittany natural instinct - would love to say I trained that one

Hi Liz will be up your way around about New Year.(seriously - dawg sitter booked etc)
Is it not a tad cold for swimming then? I vaguely remember small ice-burgs flowing past me the last time I sat on the banks of the Tweed with a kilted gent, seeing in the New Year
Have just put the Highland Fling on Pazzies training-programme
|
Paz
|
Hi Guy re the dawg-pullin-canoe milarky
All of my brats are trained to pull sledges up hill, and bringing trees back from the wood for the burning on log fire
Is not pullin' a canoe upstream is just a variation on the same theme?
Luv's a challenge will take pics and post in Jan
