Thuringian Vorstehhund

I have just read a mention of this breed in a gundog book. I believe it is the E. German version of the G.S.P...............Does anyone have any further info ???

I've never heard the term before. Vorstehhund = pointing dog. Thuringian = from Thuringia, a free state in central Germany.

One of the larger cities in Thuringia is Weimar. Grey dogs had been known in Thuringia through much of the 1800's. They were eventually named Weimaraners and declared a pure breed in 1896 (the Weim club was founded one year later) So in essence the Weimaraner is a Thuringian Vorstehhund.

In 1945 Thuringia fell behind the iron curtain. However, in 1952, the free states were dissolved and Thuringia ceased to be. It was re-formed as a state in 1990 after the wall came down. During the time of Communist rule, Weimaraners did not have their own club in East Germany. They were represented by the GSP club and had to be tested and bred to GSP standards. Maybe in an effort to differentiate them from GSP's they were called Thuringian Vorstehhunde...just a theory, I have no idea.

Thanks for the info - I read about this "breed" in Keith Erlandsons book on spaniel training published , I think, in 1996. Keith was a terrific dog trainer in his own right and was also an international trial judge. He also ,unkinown to most people , trained a few H.P.R.'s.  He definetly states the dog mentioned as being an E. German version of the G.S.P. - Keith usually knew what he was talking about so I cannot see him getting mixed up between the G.S.P. and the Weimaraner.

Since Keith is no longer with us it looks like this will remain a mystery dog !
