tips for slightly runny puppy eye

I've got 1 puppy with a little bit of a run on her eye, if it was an adult I would just bathe with slightly salty water and if that didn't work I'd use Brolene, then if that didn't work it would be off to the vets for a check up.

Would this regime be suitable for a 3.5 week old puppy or has anyone got any tips? I'm using the slightly salty water but tbh I don't want to leave it too long using that (I've been using it for 2 days twice a day at least). I think it's nothing to worry about really but being a natural born worrier I thought I'd seek help from you all.

And while I'm at it any tips for suitable toys, or things that can stimulate them?

Thanks for any advice,

Nina

Bathe in a cold tea bag. This is what I do for any of mine with runny eyes. Do it as often as you can during the day for a few minutes.

The eye isn't swollen at all?

Doesn't appear to be swollen at all Claire, it's just the type of streak under the eye that you get when they open them, that has got a little worse not better and it started to look like I should intervene hence firstly plain boiled water then the boiled water / saltwater bath.

I'll try the cold teabag idea, thank you Smile

I had a little bitch from Quba with a swollen eye through a difficult birth and I was putting a cold tea bag on her & also once she opened her eyes she had fucithalmic drops.

You can hopefully see here where her eye is swollen & cloudy  Sad

Have you checked the eye lid to make sure it isn't rolling in or any extra eyelashes are present?
I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. It hasn't been scratched by another puppy when playing or by Anya?
josie

How's it going Nina, how was the birth etc?  How many and what sexes? x
Greyghost

I use t-bags too for a normal runny eye but if there may be a chance of infection I use Colloidal Silver, it is great for lots of things as it is a natural anti biotic.

I agree with Claire make sure the eyelashes are ok.  This article may help you: http://www.petmedsonline.org/eyelash-health-for-dogs.html

Aww bless that little girl, were her eyes OK in the end Claire?

We've checked all the pups lids etc and they are OK to my eyes but if we get to the point where it doesn't get better we'll take her to the vets and get her checked.

I'll take a pic of her eye later on - they're all asleep now Smile We got 3, 2 bitches 1 dog - we did have 5 but one was behind the first puppy which was slow to come (they all were really) and didn't survive, and another was quite small and didn't make it. Lovely things they are, the bitch with the bit of a sticky eye tried to climb out. They were almost 500g born! Really strong wee things. Looking good for homes too, probably all going to previous Weim owners, possibly 3 who've all worked their dogs in the past and 1 still does Smile Happy me if it all goes to plan, but you never know.

It's hard to tell really. She has gone to a working home in Scotland and the owner wasn't bothered by her eye at all. The vets seemed to think she would be blind in the eye but every so often if you put something down on her bad side she would pick it up immediately.
She was a canny little thing. It was only 1 eye that there was a problem so I tried to take pics of her good side Laughing

I don't think I would be overly worried about your pups eye just yet especially as the head & eye shape is changing so much.

Congratulations on the pups Nina  Very Happy  hope the little ones eye clears up.

I don't like to take risks with pupster especially not eyes so would be heading for the vet.

Stimulation there is loads of stuff you can pop in the whelping box especially now mine had balls, teddy bears with all sorts of fluffy stuff on them, fox, rabbit, deer skins, pheasant, woodcock and duck wings, spoons, keys, bits of plastic tubing, small dog tuggies, bells, pretty much anything I could think of.  I loved this stage of puppies it so much fun, enjoy it.

Hope the pupsters eye gets better soon might just have scratched it so easy to do.

Have a look

It's a little red in this pic which shows it at its worst....

Heres a pic of the 3 eating from their very own personal plate Smile

Sorry Mods, I think the pics might be too big but I can't shrink them Sad

Keep bathing with the cold tea but if you are worried I would go to the vets with it. I can't see anything from the pic but there may be extra eyelashed irritating it but a vet would be able to have a thorough look.

ahhhh, they are so cute.

Don't think I'd want to share that breakfast though!!  yuck  Laughing

Thanks Claire for all the help, I think I'm going to stick with the tbag and if it doesn't get better in a few days I'll see the vets Very Happy Probably being an over-reactive mother and all that...

Each to their own Josie - my pups "love" my food  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing

We purchased a cocker puppy a few years back and he had runny eyes like that and that ended up as a blocked tear duct.   Sometimes they just need flushing out the once (I have had that done with one of my eyes) and then it should be OK.  Unfortunately with this Cocker they blocked up again and we returned him to his breeder Sad
