today out picking up

Well I have to say today was one of the wettest days I have ever been out we shoot through so finished at 3 by which time the weather was stating to clear up. I have 2 socking wet jackets but luckly father christmas gave me a new pair of leggings last night so at least that bit was dry.

I had Maverick out for 3 drives then got Vic to bring out Rumour and I swapped dogs. She is still not picking birds with confidance but coming on nicley Smile She is hunting well and dident attempt to disapear althoug I did have one scare when she put up a deer and started to give chace I yell at her when she passed me and thought that would be the last id see of her for a while the woods are still quite thick at the moment so its not always easy to see the dog, but to my surprise she came straight back looking very guilty, now I have just got to stop her even thinking about chasing them but its a big improvement.

After we had worked the wood through at end of drive and she picked one bird we started to walk back, the wire on the pen was lifted up on bottom and she worked her way in and was showing interest she went and picked a hen that I dident know was there I had to walk further uo to get into pen I had called her but had seen she had put the bird down I was very happy when she appeared from behind the brambles with bird in mouth. Very Happy

So next week I think I am only taking her out we will have a full picking up team out and they understand that I have a youngster so wont be pulling my full weight its a really nice team and we help out each other when we have youngsters.

Sounds like Rumour is getting the hang of it now.  Well done!

Yes, it does sound like she's getting the hang of it.

We were out last Saturday and the weather was APPALLING!  It started sleeting at lunchtime, which quickly turned to snow.  It was horrendous but the guns were keen to carry on Surprised

I took Teal out with me as I knew they were short of dogs and would want help picking up.  First drive was through a small wood with the guns at the bottom of the hill.  It's always a good drive but the birds are too good for the guns so not much to pick up.  However, there was a missing partridge, which someone thought could be a runner.  All the labs and spaniels had been through and I thought I may as well work Teal through as it was on the way back to the vehicles.  She hunted the ditch, and came out with said partridge!  Too say I was thrilled was an understatement.  Smile

So many times I have heard this sort of story  Rolling Eyes  "The Labs and spaniels have already covered that ground - nothing left there now.  It must have been a runner - miles away by now"  - "OOPS,  Embarassed wonder how they missed it? Embarassed"

Duh Idea  Question  - cos OUR dogs have good noses and aren't zombies!!!!!

Had this happen with us too, told by the spaniel boys.....The guns are wrong he must of missed it!!! or it was a runner!!!!  Out comes the wiry or Brittany (connie finds her share) with said bird in mouth Laughing

I love it....they dont give me any hassel anymore out on the shoot about having a wiry, because ours have proved themselves so many times Laughing

One of my best moments was with Rumours Grand dad, we have retriver trials held on a shoot a total waist of a day on the pciking up front anyway on this day it was the last drive and I was stood back with one of the markers a hen was shot and fell into the wood all the dogs were on field at the end o the drive they sent a dog for it and it came back minus bird, then they sent a second dog again back with nothing. They picked what birds has been shot and then declared the trila over I let Devon off the lead he went straight in wood and came out with the hen bird Very Happy.

This week  was again a retriver trail so not much for Rumour to do just a chance to do a bit of hunting with her to check the ground had been cleared after they moved on. I managed to fall  over in a very muddy puddle Embarassed  at least we were finished by 1
