Today went well

Mugi was out working today and I decided that we would treat this as a bit of a training day as he has had one or two minor misdemeanours and I don't want him free thinking too much.

So first drive was on lead all through the mustard (last time he went hunting the whole field in true Brittany fashion totally ignoring my whistle and although he put up all the birds he found correctly that was more luck than judgement) and he was rock steady to flush on a loose lead, we then went into maize and I let him do the final push through off-lead which he did well and responsively.

Second drive he had a good push off-lead but then sighted a bird I had missed and took off. He came back fairly quickly but was back on lead and stayed that way for the rest of the drive. He did go on point though on a tussock of grass as we were heading back to the van, I started to pull him away thinking he was being silly!!! He was quite determined so I let him push in and out scuttled a partridge who was trying so hard to hide.

Next we were into woodland on pheasants and all dogs were on lead as the birds were very easily put to flight. That went well and so to lunch.

First drive after lunch and he worked really hard and ignored both a hare and a fallow deer but he was still on lead as we were again pushing birds slowly. Again at one point when we were watching a flush away he went on point and sure enough there was a hen pheasant, I dropped his lead and moved around him and he held position staunchly till we were able to move when I let him flush his bird.

The final drive had to be done quickly so all dogs were allowed to work free and although he pushed too far a couple of times he came back each time and did well.

He very nearly retrieved his first pheasant too so I have a couple of scrawny birds to do some retrieve practice with. He is fine with partridge but being an old 'untrained' dog he does start to forget himself on warm game and although he is welcomed and given license to err I don't want to push the acceptance too far.
